Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Prince
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m one of those people who has always known what I’ve wanted to do, even from a very young age. I remember being six or seven, curled up in a corner with my journal and my clunky pencil writing stories. Pretty sure my mom still has some of them in a shoebox somewhere. I went to college for economics because that seemed like the grown up thing to do, but I knew I wouldn’t be using my degree. I’ve only ever wanted to write books.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hah, no. The thing they don’t tell you about pursuing your passion as a career (or maybe they do tell you, I’ve been known to miss memos) is that it can suck the joy out of the work if you let it. And it’s disheartening. And it takes forever. And even when you achieve your big goal, you’re still not satisfied, because are we ever? Becoming an author is hard and it stays hard. I think once you realize that the struggle isn’t going to end, it actually makes the whole thing a little bit better. You can let go of some of your expectations and focus on telling stories.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a fantasy author who writes about magic, love, outcasts, and belonging. I care about characters, and they drive my stories. I also care about the written word, and I do try to infuse some poetry into my books, which is something I want to hold to even if it takes longer and makes writing them harder.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Oh gosh, yes. I’m flailing a little; where do I even start? I’m part of a critique group including James Shipman and Catherine Matthews, both of whom publish in different genres, which I think is a plus. We’ve been together for about three years and they’ve seen my stories when they’re at their roughest and have helped me become better. I have my agent Haley Casey who has put so much work into revisions for manuscripts, and is also a huge cheerleader. My family is incredibly supportive, and my husband is at the center of it all. No one sees the ups and downs like he does, and I literally could not do this without him.
