Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Sniderman
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If you told me a few years ago that I would have a photography business, I would not have believed you. I double majored in psychology and economics in college, went on to get my masters in education, and started working as a board certified behavior analyst. When I went back to work after having my second daughter, I decided to leave my job to be home with my kids more.
After a few weeks of being home, I started taking online photography classes. I have always loved photographing families and children. Even before having my own, I would photograph family and friend’s children.
My husband encouraged me to take the leap and start my own business. I took the leap and never looked back. I feel so lucky that I get to do something that makes me so happy and that I am so passionate about.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business can be challenging. I struggled with “imposter syndrome” initially and still sometimes do. When I feel it creeping in, I scroll back to my first few posts on Instagram and see how far I have come. I try to compare myself to my “beginning self” rather than all the other photographers out there. It is easy to fall into the comparison trap on social media.
I love photography, but quickly learned when starting my business that there is a lot more to a photography business than just taking pictures. Most of my time is actually not spent on taking pictures, but on the behind-the-scenes business work, prepping for sessions, or editing pictures. I feel like now, 6 years in, I have a good handle on both the photography and business side of things
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create Joyful, Genuine, and Connected Newborn and Family Photography. My goal is not only for you to walk away from your photo sessions with cherished family photos, but to also have a great time and make memories during the session.
Something that I am very proud of is my NICU Experience blog series. I started a NICU/Special Care Nursery blog series almost 5 years ago with my own story. In this series, parents share about their experiences in the NICU or Special Care. I felt very alone and unprepared for our Special Care Nursery stay.
I started this blog series hoping to help other parents experiencing the NICU/Special Care Nursery not feel so alone. All the parents who contributed so far have said that writing their blog has been a cathartic experience. I am so thankful that I have found a way to use my photography to help others experiencing the NICU/Special Care Nursery.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My mother’s side of the family lived in California, so we would take yearly trips to visit them. I have great memories of taking walks with my family. We would feed horses and sheep and play pooh sticks over a small bridge along the way. We would pick lemons from the lemon tree and make lemonade after a long walk. I have such great memories from all those trips.
