Today we’d like to introduce you to SALUSTIANO.
Hi SALUSTIANO, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was 5 years old when I made the decision of to be an artist: I had made a drawing and I showed it to my mother. When she saw it she was amazed and surprised, then she went straight to me and hugged me full of emotion. I felt that this embrace somehow invested me with the responsibility of being an artist. It was as if I suddenly had permission to try. I considere that maternal permission is essential to develop all the potential everyone of us is carrying inside.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I come from a family that was financially poor but very rich in good values and honesty. My brothers and sister and me grew up surrounded by love and, from an early age, we were supported in our vocations. My family supported me and trusted me and my creative capacity. This trust gave me enough energy and strength to overcome the complications and difficulties that the art world has.
The main drawbacks I encountered in my artistic career were to cross paths with people who worked in art without loving art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Since I was very young I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to art. I felt that I could communicate with the viewer without using words. Just paintings. This way I could connect with their emotional side in a more direct and effective way.
I started to exhibit my works in the exhibition hall of my high school. Then through alternative spaces in my youth and step by step I entered the world of art galleries, museums and art fairs. Today I can be proud to work and exhibit in countries of several continents.
I think there have been several aspects that have contributed to my professional success. On the one hand, having my own unique and recognizable style of painting has helped me to make my way in this complicated and competitive art world. On the other hand, the respect I feel for the spectator makes me demand the maximum I can give in each of the works I create, without any hint of laziness.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think that nowadays, thanks to the internet, people can know a lot about the artists they are interested in. There are already many interviews in which I have told my whole life! Especially now, after all the commotion of the poster of the Holy Week of Seville last year. The news went, literally around the world; tv and radio channels, newspapers from all over the world echoed the news. From distant countries like China, India, Iran to Interviews in the most prestigious media such as BBC, CNN, CBS news, The Sunday Times, Los Angeles Time… Although it is true that the curiosity went beyond the merely artistic. Through Instagram I was asked many intimate questions about my sentimental or personal life, about my partner, about my son Horacio, who was the model for the famous poster… Of course, I didn’t answer any of them, we must always leave the door of mystery and speculation open.
