Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Grieshaber
Sally, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I really got my start with intimate wedding and elopement photography when the pandemic hit in 2020. All of a sudden, the wedding industry came to a screeching halt and couples were still wanting to get married! I had always wanted to get into elopement photography but my schedule was so chaotic between attending undergrad and working alongside. Suddenly, my schedule was severely freed up as well so I decided to pursue photography more seriously.
My business really took off and I started with photographing the intimate backyard weddings during this timeframe! Fast forward a few years and I travel all over the country capturing intimate weddings and elopements in incredible landscapes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have–of course–learned an immense amount over the past nearly 5 years! I’ve learned how to be completely self-employed and what running your own business looks like. I’ve also had to relocate my business and make a new name for myself as I switched out of the midwest into the Pacific Northwest. That in itself was an uphill battle that took a couple of years to get my footing with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I capture intimate and authentic wedding days out in incredible landscapes. Not only do I do that, but I also photograph and video using both digital and old school film. I pride myself on *feeling* the photo. I capture in a way that documents what the day looked like, who the couple truly is, and feels nostalgic. When looking back on the photos, I want the viewer to feel like they were truly there–even if they weren’t.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Leave No Trace has become a huge pillar of my business and for good reason. When I started my career, I was based in the midwest and there really isn’t much talk about Leave No Trace or how to treat our public lands. When I started traveling, I quickly realized just how vulnerable some of these climates were and how detrimental it was to protect such highly visited landscapes. I have watched such beautiful sights get trashed or even closed off completely to all human foot traffic. I’ve learned to really research in depth the locations I am taking couples to and how to best protect those ecosystems while providing an amazing experience and jaw-dropping photos for my couples. There is a happy middle ground and it is so important to always Leave No Trace on our public lands.
