Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Curtiss
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began comedy in 2016 and at my first open mic I bombed horribly. I kept pursuing it and began to see improvements after a few years of bombing and seeing no progress. Now I am getting shows, opening for bigger acts, and being presented opportunities I did not think would come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Comedy is subjective and the act of producing quality jokes is difficult. A lot of the struggles I have faced have been trying to be relevant in my artform in some way. Trying to get shows, improving my writing and stage presence and being consistently funny has been a challenge.
Comedy is an art like composing an orchestral piece or performing ballet. However, it is trial by fire until you get things to work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a comedian from South Jersey. I write for New Noise Magazine, run a record label called Over Caffeinated Records, and I just recently began a podcast called Get Into It where I interview comedians and musicians on the albums that got them into their artform.
I’m proud of how resilient I have been through the whole process. It is a tough road to travel doing stand-up comedy. You are met with a great deal of disappointment, rejection, and questioning if this is your calling. But, it’s a fun road, too. You meet some great people doing stabd-up comedy. You honr your skills and are able to get a crowd laughing, which makes you realize it’s not so serious.
I am an average white guy in his 30’s doing comedy. I’m very similar to many other people doing stand-up. But, o think the ideas I have and the goals I set sets me apart from the others.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is crucial in comedy (or anything really). The connections you make today can help you immensely tomorrow.
The best thing to do is be yourself and be kind. Be a good friend to those who need help and those who don’t. Promote your friends, help others with opportunities, and you will see the result of that tenfold.
