Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Max Twitty
Robert Max, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story started in St Louis, Missouri. I grew up with my core family, Grandmother, Mother and Uncle. We are all very close, and they are the individuals who have always supported, influenced, and guided me throughout life. I moved to NYC around 13, stay with my father. I’ve lived here ever since. New York taught me a lot, mainly about people, street smarts, navigating personalities, and it helped me develop my sense of fashion. I finished college here, which was why I started my website, GentsAmongMen.com.
As I was moving into the “real world” and looking for a career, I needed clothes for interviews. With some research and trial and error, I figured out how to dress well for less. The website was born because I wanted to share this knowledge with other young men. The website was successful and allowed me to meet many people and do many exciting things.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge was / is consistency—ALWAYS creating and having something valuable to share. Most of the time, I stay in my head and get in my way of ensuring something is perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist. Good enough is real, and I must know when to say, “Okay, this is good enough based on what I have.” I have gotten better at releasing the pressure of perfection or getting in my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I hope to be involved in or contribute to a few things. I don’t want to go too deep into them, but next year, I am pushing myself to step out of my comfort zone more and take more risks. As they say, “Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat.”
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is what you make it. It’s not about the quantity but the quality of life. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s true. I’ve gone through my battles of trying to explore or do things for temporary happiness to feed the pleasure principle. In the end, it hurt me and the people around me. Close to me. Ones I said I would protect physically and emotionally. I had to work on myself and acknowledge what brings me happiness. What brings me happiness is PEACE. I’ve disrupted my peace by not protecting it. I felt like I had to prove something. As I’ve gotten older, I don’t care much about things enough to argue with people. We all have our opinions and perspectives, but when it becomes too much to have a conversation, I shut down and move on and leave the clowns for the circus.
