Today we’d like to introduce you to Qianwen Yu
Hi Qianwen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have a background in architecture and drawing studies spanning several years. Following rigorous exam-oriented studies in architectural design and painting, I developed an interest in art that defies the established rules of my training while maintaining its influence. In 2018, upon arriving in Chicago, I began experimenting with different materials and methods of animation. My interest in textiles started while I was attempting to combine woven fabrics with my animation. After falling in love with the work of 20th-century Bauhaus weaving artists, weaving became a core part of my work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were times of uncertainty, not knowing which direction to pursue or what truly interested me. After graduation, balancing work and artistic creation became a significant challenge. These struggles are common for emerging artists.

Through projects like translating musical compositions into woven textures and creating symphonies from weaving drafts, I investigate the symbiotic nature of these two art forms. By utilizing modern technology alongside historical research, I delve into the shared principles and concepts underlying weaving and music, revealing surprising parallels and inviting audiences to contemplate the interconnectedness of these two art forms.
