Today we’d like to introduce you to paul jost.
paul, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m another musician making my way through life. I started on drums at 6 years old and began playing professionally at 12 I, like so many of my brothers and sisters on this journey, have countless stories that continue to define our place in the world. I’ve been blessed with a handful of wonderful teachers, friends and colleagues who’ve been supportive and nurturing. I hesitate to mention names because I’m sure to leave someone out. Seems we often overlook those right in front of us. I know, that though accidental, I’ve been guilty of that.
I try my best to work hard and passionately without feeling “entitled” or “deserving” just because I do those things. Those are the elements and building blocks I think everyone should practice in order to “show up” prepared at whatever we’ve chosen to do. Though I’m proud of my work and deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve been afforded, nothing comes close to the joy, appreciation and love I feel for my wife and family. It’s a very small but powerful group of loving individuals, and I know in every fiber of my being just how blessed I am to be one spoke in that wheel.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Neither have changed much in my life. It’s still basically: (1) finding work and (2) finding work that’s gratifying and challenges you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician, vocalist and arranger. My latest work as a vocalist is on Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band album “Walk A Mile In My Shoe”, Cathy Segal Garcia “Social Anthems Volume 2”, and Lauren White “Making It Up As We Go Along”. In the works is a project with bassist/composer Lee Smith.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
When my son Daniel (a gifted guitarist and vocalist in his own right) heard my tracks on Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band’s latest album “Walk A Mile In My Shoe” he loved them and never heard me in a big band this way. I told him that beside the obvious gratitude I have for being invited to the album, I think the thing I’m most grateful for is staying the course. As always, I advised him to keep on his musical journey and reminded him how it never stops giving back. He already knows that, but what he might not know is that at any time (at any age) someone he respects so highly might knock on his door with a blank canvas and say “I believe in you. Grab your brush and paint what you see”. (Thank you Orrin ❤)
