Today we’d like to introduce you to Omkcar Shethe
Hi Omkcar , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Omkcar from India who wasn’t very good at academics. However, he was always creative with his excuses for why he didn’t score well on tests. He decided to use this creativity for something bigger.
He tried making films but soon fell in love with advertising, especially writing ads. He went to an ad school to learn more and became a copywriter. His job took him from India to New York, and together he has been working for five years.
The moral of the story? Your test scores don’t decide your future, but not using your strengths to your advantage can hold you back.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I face obstacles every day, and as a copywriter, it’s essential to understand how to write for a particular brand to help them outshine their competitors. This can be challenging because, even after putting in hours of work, the client might not always like the outcome.
Being an immigrant adds another layer of difficulty, as you constantly have to prove yourself and can never truly be at ease. The market is also very uncertain, making it difficult to land new gigs. Despite all this, I always try to remember why I started my journey and to never lose confidence in myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is all about giving brands a distinct and relatable voice. From crafting emails and video ads to scripting influencer videos and creating thumb stopping social media posts, I bring ideas to life across platforms. Staying ahead of trends is essential, and what was once my guilty pleasure, doom scrolling social media, has become my secret weapon. Keeping up with the latest trends is no longer just a habit; it is a superpower I use to create content that truly resonates for both me and the brands I write for. Funny how that worked out!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I come from Mumbai, the financial capital of India, where things have always been competitive. My dad is an engineer, and my mom is an interior designer, so they always aimed to guide me into a clear career path. I also have a twin sister who excelled in academics, which put constant pressure on me to perform well in my studies. Initially, I was scared that my not-so-great academic marks would prevent me from landing a good job in the future.
Fortunately, I inherited my mom’s creative skills and my dad’s strong willpower, which led me to decide that I wanted to be a creative. There were some initial conflicts, as my dad wanted me to pursue accounting, but he eventually understood and supported my decision.
I was never someone to settle on just one thing, which gave me the freedom to explore everything from sports to filmmaking. Now that I’ve found where I truly belong, I’m fully committed to making a name for myself in the dynamic and eccentric world of advertising.
