Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Kolb
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always had a love for photography, but didn’t pursue it and study until I was almost 40. I often wonder why I didn’t start earlier. I went to college to be a Paralegal and built a successful career doing so. While it was a great career, I never experienced the passion or joy that I experience with photography and my clients. It’s so easy to get caught up in the mundane of every day. Working for the weekend and the next paycheck. We only have one life to live and I can’t think of a better way to do so than waking up everyday and doing what you love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been many challenges throughout my journey. Initially, it was just making the decision and putting myself out there. There was the fear of not being good enough. Putting yourself out there for others to judge is very difficult especially when you’re a perfectionist. The thought of disappointing my clients was very heavy. In the beginning I would have high anxiety, sometimes break into hives leading up to the session, would think about cancelling just out of the fear of failing or disappointing people. This was probably my most difficult challenge, just getting started. Once I jumped, I was pretty much in a sink or swim mode. Failure wasn’t an option.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in maternity, newborn and child portraiture. I am most proud of my lasting connections with my clients. Capturing and sharing in this amazing time with my clients creates such a meaningful experience. Watching families grow from two to three, three to four and so on is truly so amazing! In my life the most amazing experiences all include my family, becoming a mother and even a grandmother. For me, there’s truly nothing more meaningful. I believe my passion and love for what I do is what sets me apart from others. I truly care for my clients and love to watch their families and their children grow. It brings so much joy and meaning to me as a person and as a professional.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It is truly such a journey, but the best advice I could give is to not compare yourself to other photographers. There is no way to know what one photographer’s journey endured compared to another. Follow your heart, your passion and stay focused on yourself. Comparing yourself to other photographers will only fill you with self-doubt and slow you down. Get out of your way and embrace your journey.
