Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakkab

Hi Nakkab, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

I am a tattoo artist from Turkey with 9 years of experience. My story starts from when I used to work at a 9-5 job at the age of 18. With my first paycheck I got my first tattoo. After 7 months, with my last paycheck, I bought a tattoo machine and quit my job. Because in that 7 months tattooing grew in me. Since I was already into designing from a very young age, I was confident that this could be a career. Now I am a 28 years old professional in my field and my unique style has a worldwide reputation!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Like many people, I had and still have struggles. I was not lucky enough to have a smoother road. Being an artist in Turkey has always been somewhat of a struggle. Studying fine arts is considered an automatic “unemployed” stamp on your forehead. Moreover, people are still not open enough for the idea of tattooing, let alone abstract tattoos. I’m glad that this is changing lately with the possibilities of social media by sharing information easier globally. Young artist candidates can now enlarge their vision and they don’t have to believe what people say about “earning your life.” Following your passion is getting easier, and it can only bring positivity to your life.

In my case, it was challenging to convince my family first that I am choosing an unusual path. Later on, it was time to convince the people around me to get unusual tattoos. The tattoo culture in Turkey is still developing. The majority of the client base is not open to contemporary styles compared to Europe. So it is a financial hustle in the beginning until you make a name for yourself with your unusual style. Once you get people to love your work, it gets easier and easier.

I can say that I convinced people, including my family and clients, through my hard work and dedication. The lesson should be not to give up on your goals. Compared to other possible scenarios I could live in right now, I am happy with where I am socially, financially and professionally.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work? What sets you apart and what are you most proud of?

I am specialized in abstract/linework style and known for my works that combine traditional Turkish marbling and contemporary tattooing. What sets me apart is my creative process named “Sernakkab.” I create designs using floating ink on water, then adapt it to clients’ anatomy of the desired area. 

I am proud that I had the chance to teach my technique at workshops to tattoo lovers in Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Turkiye Art Fest. Another proud moment was the workshop I hosted for Nike at HOPE Alkazar Istanbul. I led participants to customize football boots with different marbling techniques. As an artist, I feel fulfilled to be able to spread art in a way I love!
