Hi Misty Jayne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For 15 years, I was the definition of “hairstylist success”—fully booked, amazing clients, and thriving in commission salons. But behind the scenes, I was constantly stressed about money. No matter how much I made, I spent just as fast because I didn’t know how to manage it. That all changed when I had a baby. I realized that if I wanted to create real freedom for my family and career, I had to get my finances in order outside of the salon.
I took what I learned from traditional finance methods, made it work for my lifestyle, and paid off $48,000 in debt in two years. That shift completely changed my business—I went independent, bought my dream home, and for the first time, felt in control. But I also saw how many hairstylists were stuck in the same financial cycle I had been in.
In 2019, I taught my first financial wellness class to a group of hairstylists, and it lit me up! Since then, I’ve coached dozens of stylists and salon owners, spoken on industry stages, and helped professionals shift their money mindset to build sustainable wealth. In 2020, I launched The Starting Messy Podcast, creating a space for industry leaders to share their journeys.
Now, I help hairstylists get financially confident so they can take control of their careers, reduce stress, and build a business that truly supports their lives—not the other way around. Financial wellness is self-care, and I’m here to change the way the beauty industry thinks about money.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not.
Coming from opening an independent salon business where I already had a full clientele was very different from starting a business from the ground up. Knowing when to invest and when to DIY was a challenge, and I made quite a few mistakes.
Building my coaching business has been life lesson after life lesson. Being extremely niche in my area of expertise was a challenge in how to market my services. It took years to fully get solid on who I help and how I can help them, let alone how to properly communicate it.
Fortunately, I know all the lessons are when I truly needed to move forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an accountability coach for hairstylists who specializes in money cause that is where I believe that once you have control over your money, you have control over your life.
I help those in the beauty industry get out of their own way and get out of their own head. I thrive in breaking down big overwhelming goals into small steps. Most of the people that resonate with me are not as far away from their goals as they think. I help them see that in my coaching and podcast.
I genuinely want to see the hair industry thrive as a whole. I believe in empowering hairstylists and salon owners to live life on their own terms and not be trapped in lives that they don’t want because of money. I want stylists to drop the “shoulds” and prove to themselves they can create their own version of success in an industry that can give us so much fulfillment. You can have purpose and passion and still make money that impacts you in a positive way.
As a human, living on my own terms is important to me. Living so authentically that it attracts the right people. Connection is my favorite, and the more I can show up as me, the deeper the connection.
What were you like growing up?
When I was really young I loved music and roller skating!! I still do to be honest but have had to find that inner child again through my own healing.
In my teens and 20s, I was a party that wasn’t fully ready to acknowledge her pain. I chose short-term pleasure over the long win and spent my 30s undoing a lot of damage I had done to myself. That is why now. I am a big advocate for doing the hard inner work and reflecting on your shadows to create a brighter future.
