Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Chaviers
Hi Misty, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Story: A Journey of Survival and Advocacy
In 1996, at just 18 years old, I found myself in a harrowing situation of severe physical and psychological abuse inflicted by someone I trusted and loved. Marriage, to me, symbolized a lifelong commitment, but the man I married—the father of my child—became my abuser. For 26 years, I carried the weight of this trauma in silence, fearing the shame and judgment of my community.
In 2014, I felt a strong calling to share my story publicly. I reached out to advocates for guidance, and their encouragement helped me prepare for this next step. However, just as I began to take action, my health took a turn for the worse. I was diagnosed with lupus, endured a sudden blood transfusion, and faced the devastating failure of my lungs. For six years, I relied on oxygen and grappled with the physical and emotional toll of being disabled.
At my lowest point, unsure of how much time I had left, I turned to prayer for direction. In 2019, I took a leap of faith and launched the I’m a Survivor Podcast. This platform allowed me to share my story, connect with other survivors, and offer hope to those facing similar challenges. That same year, I collaborated with domestic violence advocates across the country, became a certified victims advocate, and began working in my community to support survivors. I partnered with law enforcement to ensure victims had access to resources and guidance during their most vulnerable moments.
Miraculously, as I poured myself into advocacy, my health began to improve. I was able to come off oxygen, and step by step, I started to rebuild my life. In 2022, I was offered a position as a Case Manager and Advocate for Domestic Violence Services at the YWCA. This role has allowed me to bring life-changing resources to the very community where I once endured abuse.
Over the years, my work has been recognized with numerous awards, and my podcast has inspired countless listeners. But the accolades aren’t what drive me; my purpose is to help others and to shine a light on the strength that lies within every survivor.
Today, my journey continues. I’m preparing for the next chapter by transitioning my podcast to a video format, ensuring it reaches an even broader audience. The I’m a Survivor Podcast will return stronger than ever, and my mission remains the same: to empower survivors, raise awareness, and advocate for change. This is not the end of my story—it’s just the beginning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not been without its challenges. I have faced significant health issues that have tested my resilience, as well as the emotional burden of being judged by others. These experiences, while difficult, have shaped my perspective and strengthened my commitment to the work I do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Case Manager/Advocate for Domestic Violence Services with YWCA Central Alabama. In this role, I assist survivors in completing Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders and provide ongoing support as their advocate. I also attend court proceedings alongside my clients to offer guidance and advocacy throughout the legal process.
Additionally, I am a Professional Podcaster, using my platform to raise awareness and empower others by sharing stories of resilience and survival.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
