Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Wilkins.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was working from home in a cushy 9-5 job, when I was unexpectedly laid off from my job; my wife and I had just purchased a home, so I was understandably distraught. However, months before I was laid off, a friend of mine who used to be in the janitorial field kept encouraging me to start a cleaning business. When I was laid off, I thought that it was the perfect time to start, so that’s what I did. It was the best decision that I ever made, and in hindsight, I am so glad that I was laid off!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth; one struggle that I have faced in the past (and still do sometimes now) is believing that I deserve it. I used to struggle to believe that I deserve to reap the fruitage from being a cleaning business owner. I also used to struggle to believe that I deserved to be awarded cleaning contracts over my competitors, who have been in business longer than I am. These mindset struggles have made my road bumpier than it should have been, but I am working to overcome them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We provide janitorial services to commercial buildings; we specifically specialize in providing cleaning services to equipment offices (think John Deere). I really enjoy ensuring that my clients come in to a clean facility, so that they can work in cleanliness and in peace.
I am most proud of giving office and facility managers peace of mind and tranquility when it comes to the cleaning. Office managers face a lot of problems in the day to day operations, but I love not being one of their problems.
