Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Kong.
Hi Meredith, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The seeds of my entrepreneurial journey were planted early in my childhood. I remember never wanting to do anything I was told. I knew even back then I wanted to be my own boss! After having my son and wanting to only give him the best food possible, I fell in love with making ice cream for him from scratch. It sounds so cliche but it felt like that proverbial lightbulb went off in my head and I dove headfirst into recipe development with the encouragement of my sister (and business partner!) It wasn’t long before Lick was born and we began selling our original flavors at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market in 2011. Working out of a church kitchen, we created our ice cream morning and night. Lick became this little monster that we grew and evolved into what it is today with the help of our amazing team (and a little bit of luck!)
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a food business is a rollercoaster. You are at the mercy of so
many different factors including inflation, seasonality, the weather, etc. Very rarely do I get to sit still, and I’ve missed a lot of time with my human kids due to Lick being my biggest and loudest baby sometimes. It has to come first a lot and I’ve really had to set strong boundaries around operating it as my kids have gotten older. I’m so lucky that I have the best team in the world that allows me to step back a bit when I need to.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lick is known for handcrafted ice cream using only 100% natural ingredients and never any stabilizers or preservatives.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I always felt like an outsider growing up. I never felt like I fit in anywhere fully. Always been a bit of a weirdo. As a kid I would “rescue” all kinds of wild animals, dig for fossils, collect rocks, keep spiders as pets, etc
