Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Joyner
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Her writing and directorial debut, Reimagined Volume III: Young Thang, also known as The Young Thang with 2 Skins; or, she was not really ugly, but beautiful, as she was born with two skins fable is keen storytelling that blends thoughtful narrative, emotional depth, and strong visual prowess.
Raised in N.C. based in N.Y.C., her screen credits include FX mini-series “Mrs. America”, Spectrum Original’s “The Bite”, CBS Networks’ Blue Bloods, FBI, Madame Secretary and Evil. You may learn more about her work in the Los Angeles Times, AfroTech, Black Film, Slate Magazine, AYO Magazine, AV Club, The Today Show, The Morning Show, New Normal Rep: Play Date and TEDx Vancouver.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While my journey has been incredibly rewarding, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. One of the challenges I’ve faced has been navigating the entertainment industry as a Black woman. I’ve been told that I didn’t fit the mold, that I wasn’t a leading lady. These experiences were isolating and disheartening, but they also fueled my determination. I refused to let their words define me and found that if my eyes and ears were open, for every “no” I experienced, there was a friend, colleague, or experience that told me “Yes, you’re in the right place”.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a director, writer, actor, vocalist, and professor with a passion for telling authentic and thought-provoking stories. I specialize in creating work that blends thoughtful narrative, emotional depth, and strong visual prowess. I am known for my ability to bring diverse perspectives to the screen and for my commitment to empowering marginalized voices.
As my writing and directorial debut, I am most proud of my work on ‘Reimagined Volume III: Young Thang,’ a VR animation series that explores themes of identity, belonging, and resilience. This project allowed me to step into the VR community, of which I am now in love, and create a truly immersive and meaningful experience.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with audiences on a deep emotional level. I believe that storytelling should be a transformative experience, and I strive to create work that resonates with people on a personal level.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve never had a mentor in the classic sense, but I’ve found that wisdom can pop up in the most unexpected places. Sometimes it’s a friend, a family member, a boss, or even a stranger. Leading with a complimentary truth, “Wow, you really seem to have it together… tell me how you do it?!” is a great place to start a relationship. It’s like stumbling upon a hidden treasure. You never know where you’ll find it, but when you do, it’s a real gem.
