Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquis Sewell.
Hi Marquis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I was a kid. I’d be sat in front of the TV watching Bad Boys, Toy Story, and Rugrats. Film has forever held a special place in my heart. I officially started to pursue my acting career in 2021. I was in the house binge watching the show Grownish, and the movie ‘Malcom and Marie’ had just released on Netflix. The performances and the emotions I felt observing both inspired me. I had just received my stimulus check and I came across a program called “Book More TV,” which is a program designed to teach actors about the film industry and different methods and techniques involving the industry. The program is ran by Christine Horn who is an amazing credited actress and mentor. I owe my success to all of the founding films, TV shows, and the Book More TV program.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Growing up I was a child who was a Jack Of All Trades. I was never great at anything specifically, so it was hard to be the “best.” I grew up with low confidence and I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Acting saved my life. I fell in love with the craft and the excitement of all of the possibilities that come with it. Some of the struggles along the way have been learning on the fly and not taking everything personally. Learning to take rejection and turn each rejection into a lesson was something I had to get more comfortable with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an actor, writer, director, and producer. I specialize in film and have credits ranging from a multitude of short films and student films to network TV credits on NBC and Showtime. I’m most proud of the journey and growth as an artist from beginning to present. I’m extremely proud of all of the abilities I’ve crafted, techniques/methods I’ve learned, and the network and credits I’ve built. I think what sets me most apart from others is my willingness to keep learning everything. In this profession, anything is possible. Being open minded and being multifaceted is what sets me apart from others. My want to learn the ins and outs and explore different jobs is what I believe can differentiate anyone.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to delve more into writing, directing, and producing, while also establishing myself as a great actor. I’m looking forward to writing more scripts, bringing them to life while also starring in said projects, and expanding my network and getting more creatives involved. Building a community is what I feel is most important and changing the industry for the better to give more recognition to those whose voices aren’t as loud. I want to be part of the change that I would’ve liked to see as a child.
