Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahsa Afsharpour
Hi Mahsa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mahsa Afsharpour, and I’m the founder of Saga Interiors. My journey began in Tehran – and later in Sweden – where my love for design first took root. Growing up, I was always surrounded by beauty and given carte blanche to express my creativity, and it wasn’t long before I knew that design was my true calling.
As a child, I yearned for a home that encapsulated all our hopes and dreams as we embarked on our new life in a new country. That longing became the seed from which Saga Interiors grew. On the day my family transformed our new living space into a place of beauty and comfort, the mission of Saga Interiors was born: to replicate the genuine happiness and sheer delight I felt through that transformation years ago!
When I moved to the United States, I was determined to turn my passion into a career. I dove into formal education, and gained both knowledge and practical experience that would eventually pave the way for Saga Interiors. With every step, my vision grew clearer: to create spaces that blend creativity with functionality, transforming ordinary places into extraordinary havens.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an immigrant and a woman starting fresh in a new country, I faced a multitude of obstacles on my journey. One of the most significant challenges was breaking into the highly competitive design market. Without a solid network, every step required perseverance and a strong vision to make my mark.
Establishing a brand that stands out in a crowded field was no easy feat: I had to prove myself not just as a designer, but as a businesswoman capable of managing a growing enterprise. Handling client expectations, navigating the complexities of financial management, and maintaining the delicate balance between creativity and practicality often seemed daunting.
And there were times when the weight of these responsibilities felt overwhelming! Balancing the creative aspects of design with the practical demands of running a business required steadfast resolve. I feel my upbringing has equipped me with a resilient mindset and an adaptive approach that allowed me to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the design industry. So each setback eventually became a learning opportunity, fortifying my resolve and leading Saga Interiors to where it stands today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Saga Interiors is, to me, more than just a design firm: it is a means through which I get to witness the joy and appreciation that light up my clients’ faces as we, together, bring their dreams to life. Each project is an opportunity to breathe life into spaces, and turn them into personalized havens that tell a story of their own! Our projects range from residential homes to commercial spaces, each designed with an eye for detail and an understanding of the client’s needs. That’s why our process involves close collaboration with them, so that their vision is brought to life in every aspect of the design, too. We also pride ourselves on our ability to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
While essential, I find the administrative side of running a business, such as paperwork and bookkeeping, to be less enjoyable as it takes time away from the creative process. Dealing with supply chain issues, such as delays or material shortages, is also frustrating as these obstacles can disrupt project timelines and create stress for both me and my clients.
Managing unrealistic expectations can be challenging, especially when clients’ visions are not feasible within their budget or timeline. And last but not least, balancing work and personal life is tough, especially during peak project periods, often leading to long hours and tight deadlines that sacrifice personal time and leisure.
I love the creative freedom that comes with being an interior designer, as each project is a blank canvas that allows me to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of traditional design! One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing the satisfaction on my clients’ faces when their vision comes to life, knowing that I’ve helped create a space that truly resonates with them. I am truly passionate about the transformative power of design and how it can enhance the way people feel and live in their homes or workplaces. Besides, I enjoy the constant learning required in the ever-evolving design industry, keeping my work fresh and exciting!
