Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelyn Howard
Hi Madelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always considered myself an artist. In school I always took the extra art courses, it’s always been my passion. I was so honored to once again be asked to participate in the Rockland Arts Festival hosted in Rockland County NY. I was born and raised in Rockland. To be considered and to have my art displayed amongst other wonderful talent truly is an honor. It’s something I really enjoy and am passionate about so it’s wonderful to be recognized for my work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’d say my struggle though has given me strength and perspective. I’ve been open about this, I struggle with my mental health. I’m also on the spectrum for autism and also struggle with Tourette’s, which is involuntary muscle movements. Due to these struggles, sometimes doing what I want to do can be a challenge. Art is my escape from all of this. Society has so many expectations of what one “should” or “shouldn’t” be doing, but that’s why art is so important to me. A blank canvas never judges, and you can do whatever you want to it. It’s freedom, and I intend to hold onto it as long as possible.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I dabble in pretty much anything creative. I paint/draw, I crochet, I make jewelry, I also make 3D pieces as well using things found in nature. I try to do craft shows as often as I possibly can, I get good feedback usually. I enjoy getting to connect with people over my work, it really is the best feeling.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Never stop creating, follow your passion. This all started out as a hobby, to help deal with the struggles I previously mentioned. I never imagined I would be recognized for my work in this way, I’m grateful.
