Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyn.
Hi Lyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started riding motorcycles in June 2022, when I passed my local Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and got licensed. I immediately bought a motorcycle and rode for about 4 months, then had some electrical issues and “gave up” for 17 months. I picked it back up in March 2024, and because it had been so long, it felt like I was relearning everything. Because of this, I decided to start documenting my journey, my progress, my mistakes, and milestones on Instagram. The initial intent was sort of my own journal – I had never really intended for it to amount to anything, let alone grow to the following I currently have (over 126K across my social media platforms).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Probably not. When is anything in life smooth? Because this was never the #1 priority in life (I’m a mom, a wife, a nurse; this is where my priorities will always lie), being able to balance the time commitment between ‘real life’ and social media has been a struggle. There was definitely a point where video editing was so time consuming, that it was taking away from my relationship with my daughter. As with many other creators out there, I went through periods of social media burnout, and wouldn’t post content for a solid week. Additionally, being a motorcycle account, there were times where I couldn’t ride (either my bike was in the shop, or it was too hot), so there was a shortage of content to post. These days I like to believe I have struck a better balance between work/life/social media. I do most of my video editing after my daughter is in bed, I typically post content first thing in the morning when I wake up, and I’ll answer comments and messages during lunch or breaks at work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a motorcycle content creator, I primarily focus my content around new riders, female riders, short riders, safety, safety gear, and motorcycle products. I make content on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. I am most proud of using my platforms to build community and foster both positivity and authenticity in a social media world that often emphasizes perfectionism. I like to believe that people follow (and continue to follow) me because I showcase authentic experiences: not just achieving milestones in my motorcycle progress, but also (and I would argue more importantly), documenting failures and mistakes, and going over what lessons could be learned from it. There is a lot of potential to influence others on social media. If I can use my platform to help others: encourage new riders, comfort others that it’s ok to make mistakes and learn from them, influence new riders to be safe, vigilant, and use safety gear and apparel, then that’s a win in my book.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I consider myself fairly introverted, but this whole journey has almost forced me to come out of my shell. Being in the motorcycle community makes it a little bit easier, because you can focus on the bikes more than on yourself. Being one of the founders of our local riding community, Vegas Chill Rides, has been an absolute blessing. We have been able to connect riders across the Las Vegas Valley in a welcoming environment, hopefully fostering others’ ability to network amongst the greater community. As for mentorship, I have been very fortunate to have connected over the months with other motorcycle content creators with large followings for advice and tips. I look to some of the creators that I followed early on to see what worked for them. Instagram itself has pages, communities, and accounts for tips and tricks for growth and engagement. There are so many tools out there. I like to hope I’m paying it forward by sharing my tips and tricks with creators that have reached out to me, as well as through this interview.
