Today we’d like to introduce you to Lubeera.
Hi Lubeera, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my mother was an actress in local ghetto club in Katanga ,(Katanga is a slum). Her younger sister was a student at makerere university pursuing Music Dance and Drama and at the same time my elder sister in her vacation used to work at the theatre where I encountered many actors, actresses and musicians. That is where the seed for performing arts was imparted on me and I never missed any school drama activity.
My mum realized I had a special talent so she used to take me to functions to sing and got some little money here and there. When I finished my highschool, I was sure I wanted to pursue performing arts which I did and graduated with flying colours.
At the Makerere university, one of my lecturers mentioned that my stories are always interesting and have good dialogue amongst my fellow alumni’s and in fact one of lecturer wanted to shoot one of stories then.
My love for writing stories increased when I joined Kampala film school and met Ms Lucky Lora and Manzi as my script writing teachers . Now these two are prominent filmmakers in Uganda and having them appreciate your work even at an amateur level was a big flex for me. It is then that I realized that I am actually good and writing and directing so I decided to specialise and make it my profession.
Currently by God’s grace, I am an award winner and I am still maneuvering through the industry to make it to the top.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has hasn’t been a smooth road at all because the people with big money (funders, executive producers etc) want to only work with faces they know. This challenges us even when we have good stories , no one is willing to bet there money on you. So they would rather use the known celebrities which guarantees them a return of their cash and viewership.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a filmmaker and I specialise in script writing and directing. The writing includes songs as well as I was once a musician but left it for personal reasons (you can check out sweetlah in YouTube)
Honestly I am proud of the film nominations and the few accolades that I have won. It only shows me that I am seen and I am getting somewhere.
What sets me apart from others, I believe are the stories I tell. They are aunthetic and represent the true African community.
Not forgetting that I am a part time dance as well.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best, is the sense of freedom.
