Today we’d like to introduce you to Lou Keeton.
Hi Lou, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The LouAffirms story is long and winding. It begins – as so many do – with an ending.
Or what felt like an ending at the time. When I was in fourth grade, I was diagnosed with disabilities that impacted all 5 of my senses. These disabilities are so profound that authorities believed I wouldn’t graduate from high school, attend college, or hold a regular job.
They were wrong. Thanks to the power of community and affirmation, I achieved above and beyond their predictions. Shortly after my diagnosis, my family moved to Ashland, Virginia—or the Center of the Universe, as we like to call it. The community is so kind that I felt immediately at home. Under the gentle guidance of good people, I learned to follow my bliss toward prosperity.
My story has led me to the stage, behind the camera and keyboard, and into the app-verse with the Affirm(Ed) App. I continue to craft a tale of affirmation in hopes the positivity that shapes and sustains me can transform hearts far beyond my scope.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Golly goodness, no! You can’t shine bright without people wanting to turn off your light. I push past darkness daily.
I live with PTSD and Anxiety. As my mind creates chaos, I ground myself in gratitude – but it’s never easy. So, I’ve created tools like the Affirm(Ed) App. The genius developer Boomer Rose created an app based on my idea that we should all have access to affirmation when we need it. And not just any affirmation – affirmation generated specifically for your healing journey.
The Affirm(Ed) App now lives in a beta phase on my website and Instagram @LouAffirms – all in an effort to generate a more affirming reality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I identify as an Affirmation Artist. I use my skills and talents to generate a more affirming reality. Sometimes that looks like writing, acting, singing, modeling, photography, production, event management, or directing, but it always comes back to community and caring.
I really love being able to combine all these interests to generate a vibrant community – not just in my hometown but around the world. I am blessed with a full-time job directing operations in Ashland, Virginia. From there, I get to dream up events, amp up businesses, and create connections in the Center of the Universe. Then, I get to share all that joy online through the content I create and the technology I develop – like the Affirm(Ed) App – on @LouAffirms.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Didn’t we all? For me, in particular – I learned the power of digital media. Even though I was working as a digital producer for the press at the time, my focus was still on theatre. When COVID-19 shut down the live arts, I immediately shifted my attention online. As the founding Artistic Director of the Whistle Stop Theatre Company in Ashland, Virginia, I adapted and produced a digital diary of Anne Frank. The four-part digital series lit up my community and reached hearts further than I could have imagined. I realized we are all far closer than we are apart. Developing digital media has transformed my work as a marketer, producer, director, and affirmation artist.
