Today we’d like to introduce you to Limaris Burgos-moye
Hi Limaris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I never imagined pursuing art full-time in my lifetime. I went to college and earned a Bachelor’s in Marketing and an MBA. During grad school, I ended up landing a job in higher education. It was unexpected, but it brought in a decent income, so I decided to stick with it. I got promoted twice but felt like I had reached my limit. Although I enjoyed what I did, I still felt like I was meant to do something more, something creative. When COVID hit, it allowed me to work from home, which in turn allowed me to paint. I started being more consistent on social media and showing off my art. I sold my first painting and was so excited. It felt like a great opportunity for a side hustle. In 2021, I joined the SHEIN X Designer program and launched my first clothing collection in June. That was the turning point for me. I had a conversation with my husband about pursuing art full-time and needed confirmation that I was doing the right thing. SHEIN offered another opportunity and I knew this was my moment. In October 2021, I took a leap of faith and quit my full-time job to pursue my dream. It has been 3 years, and I am so happy I took a chance on myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I am grateful for every learning opportunity along the way. Being an entrepreneur is never easy, especially as an artist. As I approach my third year, I realize that I was struggling to find my voice as an artist. I became too focused on social media views, likes, and follows, and lost my authenticity. Even though I was creating art that I enjoyed, I felt like an imposter. Sales declined, and my social media engagement suffered. I realized I needed to refocus, so I took a break, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. This year has been challenging, but I pride myself on authenticity and wanted to ensure that my art represented that as well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a contemporary/modern artist specializing in painting, photography, and design collaborations with SHEIN. My main focus is creating mini paintings and designing wearable art that combines contemporary styles with modern sensibilities. I am incredibly proud to see my art being worn and sold both domestically and internationally. It feels surreal, and I am extremely thankful. What makes me stand out is my passion for combining various artistic elements to create unique and visually captivating pieces that resonate with people who appreciate art in everyday life.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Throughout my journey, I’ve discovered that being able to pivot or change direction when necessary, has been an invaluable lesson. It has allowed me to adapt to new situations, learn from challenges, and ultimately grow both personally and professionally. Not everything will go as planned, no matter how well we prepare or organize. It’s important to be flexible and prepared to adapt to navigate through unexpected situations.
