Today we’d like to introduce you to Lili Tewes
Hi Lili, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started when my grandmother took me to see Pina Bausch’s “Café Müller” when I was three. I would not have been able to verbalize it like that, but it touched me deep to my core. I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life. That’s how I ended up moving from Germany to New York as a teenager.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating a career as a dancer in New York requires a non-stop hustle. Lately, I’ve been out of breath, both physically and psychologically. I am learning to make room for stillness, to feed my soul, and to make it a priority.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a dancer based in New York and work as a performer, model, teacher, choreographer, and rehearsal director nationally and internationally. And I have a secret life as a professional Hula dancer. From the age of ten, I studied Hula under Kumu Hula Kalei’ulaokala Makekau to later join her company in Hawai’i and toured Europe and the USA.
What were you like growing up?
I was painfully shy as a girl. Dance was how I could communicate parts of myself that I couldn’t otherwise. To this day, movement is the non-negotiable. The way I feel. My compass. How I figure myself out. How I learn to navigate this life.
