Today we’d like to introduce you to Kely Pinheiro
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began to study music when I was about 5 years old in Niteroi, a small town in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first instrument I learned to play was the recorder — all of them (Sopranino, Soprano, Contralto, Tenor, and Bass). This was possible because of a wonderful non-profit organization called Orquestra de Cordas da Grota. They bring music to financially challenged neighborhoods throughout the state, offering incredible opportunities for young musicians.
Thanks to Orquestra de Cordas da Grota, I took my first steps in music, and doors opened fairly quickly. I joined orchestras and pursued formal education in music at conservatories and music schools. The support and opportunities provided by community-based musical groups like Orquestra de Cordas da Grota were instrumental in my early development and growth as a musician. Their impact on my life has been profound, and I am deeply grateful for the foundation they provided.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! My journey has been filled with challenges. Financial support to invest in the necessary tools to grow as a musician has always been a significant struggle. Navigating the complex music industry, where factors like race, language, and connections can sometimes matter more than talent, has also been difficult. Despite these hurdles, I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’m fortunate to have met some incredibly generous people who guided me throughout my career. Their support and mentorship have been invaluable, and I’m grateful for the lessons and experiences that have shaped me into the musician I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist who loves playing the cello and singing. Over the years, I’ve developed my own unique technique and sound, which sets me apart from other musicians. I specialize in exploring Brazilian grooves, blending them with improvisation and intriguing harmonies. This fusion creates a distinct musical experience that resonates deeply with audiences. What I’m most proud of is my ability to connect with people through my music, bringing a piece of Brazilian culture to a wider audience. I believe that the combination of my personal style and dedication to my craft truly sets me apart in the music world.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people might not know about me is that up until my last year of high school, I was actually on track to become a geologist! My passion for science and traveling had me convinced that this would be the best path for me. However, despite my love for geology, I found myself increasingly drawn to music. The challenges of the music world seemed daunting at first, but ultimately, they became the motivation I needed to pursue my true passion. I’m incredibly grateful for where this journey has taken me and the experiences I’ve gained along the way.
