Today we’d like to introduce you to Keenan Powell
Hi Keenan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was wrestled to the ground in Chicago, IL. At the age of 15, I was forcibly exiled from Chicago. I currently reside in Kentucky, but I still consider Chicago my home. You can take the child out of the smog, but you can never get the smog out of the child. After wandering in the desert for years and years, I returned to my roots as a creative person. I’m trying, again, To run an Internet Radio Station, to create two or three radio comedy shows and to create some documentaries. Do I feel like I’m not doing anything without over loading myself with projects? You decide, I’m too busy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When I was 10 years old, my family went on vacation to California. If you want some historical reference, look up the day the hippies occupied Tom Sawyer’s Island. That was the day we were suppose to go to Disneyland. Instead, we went to Universal Studios. There, we watched a first assistant director direct a few scenes. Have no idea what movie. I watched this and I knew I could direct films. I said this out loud and was instantly pummeled by my family who told me I couldn’t do it. And I allowed them to convince me I couldn’t do it. If you want advice from me, it’s follow your dreams. You won’t go wrong.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have tried to create indie horror movies. They went no where. I have created a sci-fi comedy film. Capt. Corny Saves Green Stamps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNjHHuxOY_8&t=230s It really hasn’t done much, but there is still a few things under the surface. What I want to do is create some more comedy animations as well as some audio only radio shows. The Harvey Krispin Show, which is my rip off of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the Goon Show and the National Lampoon Radio Hour (even though most of them were a half hour in length)., the Adventures of Mr. Magnificent, which was inspired by Superman radio show and Captain Nice from TV. I do a two hour music show on Sunday nights, At Pepper’s Lounge, which features Jazz and Blues. I’m one of the two people who run Dragon’s Lair Radio. http://dragonlaira.com. I’ve been coming up with Mr. Magnificent merchandise that is being sold on Cafepress. https://www.cafepress.com/shop/DruckersGeneralStore/products
I want to do some documentaries as well. I realize some people think documentaries are NOT real films, but I do. I’m from Chicago originally. I don’t know how many of you or your readers remember or have heard of the 1968 riots in Chicago. One when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and one the same year at the Democrat Convention. There was a race riot in Chicago in 1919. I went to a school in the Chicago Metro area. They never said a word about the 1919 Race Riot. A lot of people have no idea what happened at the Haymarket. Those are two stories I think should be told.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Oh, for that, you would need to ask other people.
