Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Hu
Hi Julie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a sound designer and music composer, focusing on projects in film and media. My journey began with classical music, where I studied piano and flute. My desire to compose orchestral pieces led me to explore music production. Over time, I discovered that sound has endless possibilities. It can break traditional boundaries, whether through abstract experimentation or everyday sounds in film, all of which can express deep emotions. I believe that stories are at the heart of conveying messages and have the power to change the world.
During my graduate studies, I was immersed in a filmmaking environment and had the opportunity to collaborate with various filmmakers. These experiences revealed the richness of stories from different perspectives, and I enjoy how sound can enhance and shape these narratives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been an easy journey. In my field, creating involves both emotional effort and technical skill. It requires me to not only pursue what I love but also consider other trending factors. Working in the film industry adds to the challenge since it’s all about collaboration. I have to dig deep, not only into my own ideas but also to understand what filmmakers really want to express. It’s about capturing their true emotions and translating that into sound and music. Ultimately, this process of collaboration and exploration helps me grow as an artist and contribute to meaningful storytelling.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a sound designer, editor, and film mixer. I typically sound edit and mix films. I use sound for storytelling, seeing it as an invisible hand that elevates emotions to the next level. This can be achieved through the tone of dialogue, the sound of an environment, or a dramatic sound design for action scenes. It’s like music conveying emotions, but sound can be used in different genres in both concrete and abstract ways.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking– my suggestion is to prepare your own pitch but keep it short. I’m not someone who typically enjoys networking—people close to me often say I don’t seem like that—but I’m not really an extrovert. My strategy is similar to making new friends. You always know when you click with someone.
Mentor– I don’t have ‘A’ mentor. I mostly learn from artists I respect once I discover them, studying their work closely. In real life, the people who have inspired me the most have all come into my life by chance, but I believe that passion for what you love is key.
