Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Lipscomb
Hi Jessie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jessie & I’ve been a Creative all my life in some aspect. As a kid, I was always drawing & even wanted to go to college for drawing. I shifted to “digital drawing” because I thought there would be more success in Graphic Design than traditional drawing, then I fell in love with digital creation. After getting my degree, I jumped into layout design for magazines & learned that I LOVED organizing & making things “fit”. I continue working random design jobs for are, but nothing really came of them. At least long term. In 2019, I started creating digital portraits of friends & family & that took off to the point where I quit my job at the end of 2019 to pursue my own business which continued to grow with my I Am series & other pieces I started creating. Now in 2024, I feel like I’ve lived so many lives. 2019 me never would have thought I’d be painting canvases, let alone selling them!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh not at all haha. The only reason I started painting in 2023 was because I was mentally desperate & extremely depressed. The buildup to 2023 was one of the lowest timeframes of my life. Like I said before, I was selling my digital art & creations to the point where I could quit my job. This was in SC. When we moved to WA, it changed everything. The art scene here is incredible, but the cost of living is almost triple what we were used to & the compounding stress of not only trying to sell my pieces, but also to pay more bills did me in. It’s one thing to monetize your hobby, but another to remove the joy & that’s what has happen & I couldn’t recover for years until I decided to take 1 last chance & paint!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a strong background in digital creation & that’s the foundation that all my creations start from. The clean lines are what has to come from every piece in order to scratch the itch in my brain.
I think I’m known for multiple things: my art styles (joyous expressions of Black faces with gold features & my fun, nostalgic kid like illustrations), being authentic, being a Mother Creative, & rooting myself in joy.
I’m most proud of showing my kids that being an Artist is a legit job. They loooove to create with me & even tell everyone their Mom is an Artist 🥹
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Definitely that Im not quite comfortable talking bout my art to people. I love what I make & each piece is so special to me. But talking about them, the process, the meanings behind them: I always get tripped up. I’d like to think this is me being super humble because even talking to friends & coworkers is it in my art bubble about my art feels like I’m bragging even when I know I’m not. Something I’m working on!
