Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Farley
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From an early age, I harbored a profound interest in the arts, nurturing my creative pursuits through various projects spanning from comic illustration and character design to cartooning. Encouraged by familial support, I embarked on a distinctive journey towards my artistic aspirations. Opting for a strategic approach, I enlisted in the military post high school, securing a stable platform and availing myself of beneficial opportunities such as the GI Bill, which facilitated my formal education in the arts.
My tenure at The American Academy of Art in Chicago not only honed my skills but also afforded me invaluable professional experiences, notably within the realm of advertising, where I contributed to the creation of storyboards and print illustrations for corporate entities. While specializing in illustration, I pursued a minor in traditional oil painting, a discipline that continues to inform my artistic oeuvre, predominantly characterized by figurative expressions.
The trajectory of my career underwent a pivotal shift in 2010 amidst economic downturns, prompting a recalibration of my professional focus. Temporarily diverging from commercial pursuits, I dedicated significant time refining my proficiency in fine art oil painting, balancing this pursuit with employment in the hospitality sector to sustain financial stability. Subsequently, opportunities emerged within the realm of commissioned artworks, notably through collaborations with esteemed establishments such as Carnivale in Chicago and various enterprises in Los Angeles, orchestrated by restauranteur and designer, Jerry Kleiner.
Driven by an unwavering commitment to my craft, I embarked on an intensive creative endeavor, cultivating a diverse portfolio that seamlessly melds surrealistic elements with figurative motifs, interwoven with inspirations drawn from design, fashion, nature, and narrative illustration. Through steadfast dedication and a penchant for innovation, I have garnered recognition from a diverse array of clientele, spanning business proprietors, galleries, charitable foundations, and hospitality venues, catalyzing my transition into a full-time pursuit of artistic expression.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been marked by both successes and challenges. While familial support and access to educational opportunities provided a solid foundation, the transition from military service to the art world presented its share of obstacles. Economic downturns in 2010 necessitated a pivot in focus, leading to temporary setbacks and the need to balance artistic pursuits with alternative means of income. Additionally, establishing oneself within the competitive landscape of the arts industry required perseverance and dedication. However, each hurdle served as a learning opportunity, ultimately contributing to personal and professional growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in fine art oil painting with a focus on figurative work infused with surrealist elements. My artistic repertoire encompasses a diverse array of themes, drawing inspiration from design, fashion, nature, and narrative illustration. I am particularly known for my ability to seamlessly blend these influences into cohesive and evocative compositions, each telling a unique story through imagery and temperament.
What sets me apart from others is my multidisciplinary background, which spans from formal training in illustration and traditional oil painting to professional experiences in the military, advertising and hospitality. This diverse skill set enables me to approach my artwork with a unique perspective, incorporating elements of storytelling and design into my figurative expressions with a high level of attention to detail.
One of my proudest achievements is the body of work I created for Carnivale in Chicago and various businesses in Los Angeles, which garnered recognition and opened doors to further opportunities within the arts community. These experiences have not only solidified my artistic style but also affirmed my dedication to pursuing a career in the arts full-time.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking and finding a mentor in the arts community can be invaluable for personal and professional growth. One effective approach is to actively engage in local art events, exhibitions, and workshops where you can meet fellow artists, gallery owners, and other industry professionals. Attending art fairs, artist talks, and open studio events also provides opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests and aspirations.
Additionally, joining artist associations such as the Arts Club of Chicago, online forums, and social media groups dedicated to the arts can facilitate networking and mentorship opportunities. Participating in group exhibitions or collaborative projects can also help you establish connections and build relationships with other artists and potential mentors.
Personally I’ve partnered with charitable foundations and hotels to grow my network and professional capabilities in the arts. Most recently became a member of the Arts Club of Chicago.
