Today we’d like to introduce you to James Jer-z Mason
Hi James Jer-z, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began as a young child, often being taken to church. It was there that I discovered my passion for music, particularly the drums. This early love for rhythm and beats led me into the music industry, where I’ve now spent over 20 years. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel the world, performing with some of the best-known artists as well as some lesser-known but equally talented musicians.
For about a decade, I was a full-time touring musician. When that phase slowed down, I transitioned into the production side of the industry, focusing on stage management and backline teching. Now, at 45, I’m proud to run my own entertainment business, JMEG. Through JMEG, I assist in staffing tours and have a team of employees who represent my company on tours worldwide.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the significant obstacles I encountered early on was transitioning from being a musician to working in production. This shift was challenging because many of my peers initially struggled to accept me in this new role. As a band member, you’re primarily focused on your performance, but production involves a whole different set of skills and responsibilities.
Learning to manage and communicate with a wide range of people was a considerable challenge. On the road as a musician, you interact mainly with your bandmates and a few others. However, in production, you have to coordinate with numerous individuals, from stagehands to venue managers. Navigating these new dynamics and effectively communicating with so many different people were some of the big hurdles I had to overcome.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I’m an entrepreneur running my own company, Jersey Mason Entertainment Group (JMEG). We focus on staffing tours and managing various aspects of production. Additionally, I work with several artists in the industry in different capacities. When I get the chance, I also play drums at my local church on Sundays. That’s pretty much my life at the moment!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Support and collaboration are crucial to me. They are the lifeline of the arts. Without support, no one can grow, and if no one grows, there’s no one to drop the seeds for the next generation to grow. Who doesn’t love a great collaboration?
However, I’ve found that it’s becoming harder to collaborate these days. Many people are focused solely on their own advancement and are hesitant to link their artistry with others for various reasons. Despite this, I always strive to collaborate with others in the industry, in any form possible. I believe that by working together, we can achieve much more than we ever could alone.
