Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Lages Veloso
Hi Gabriela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Gabriela Lages Veloso. I’m a Brazilian writer, poet, literary critic and Master of Letras from the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA). Currently i’m a columnist for Imirante.com and Feminário Conexões. I’m Collaborates with collections and magazines in Brazil and abroad. I’am the author of the books “Através dos Espelhos de Guimarães Rosa e Jostein Gaarder: reflexos e figurações” (Editora Diálogos, 2021) and “O Mar de Vidro” (Caravana, 2023). I’m also the organizer of the anthology “Poéticas Contemporâneas: uma cartografia da escrita de mulheres” (Brecci Books, 2023) and the collection of short stories, chronicles and poems “As Sombras da Cidade” (Brecci Books, 2024). My book of poetry “O Mar de Vidro” (2023) is already part of the collection of several libraries around the world, including in the United States of America.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest difficulty is prejudice. I’m a young woman (I’m 26 now) and Latin American. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, there are still many types of prejudice: because of the gender, ethnicity, social class, nationality or age. But little by little, I’m managing to win my place in the academic and literary world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a writer, poet and literary critic. I work with literature from academic study to writing literary texts. I love books! I’ve organized anthologies with Brazilian and Portuguese writers. I’ve been published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies in Brazil and abroad, and I’ve also taken part in national literary prizes and competitions. In 2023, I noticed that I had already published many poems and that they had a thematic unity. So I put them together in a book of poetry entitled “O Mar de Vidro” (Caravana, 2023), which is my first literary work. “O Mar de Vidro” is subdivided into three parts – Gaia, Venus and Athena – which address, among other topics: environmental degradation, the social roles of women, the fight for gender, social and ethnic-racial equality, as well as reflections on existence and our place in the world.
I’m very happy with the repercussions that “O Mar de Vidro” is having, as it is already in the collection of several libraries around the world, such as: Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, in Rio de Janeiro; National Library of Portugal; Linga-Bibliothek, of the University of Hamburg, in Germany; Library of Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland; Municipal Library of Prague, in the Czech Republic; Library of Camões – Portuguese Cultural Center in Vigo, in Spain; Library of the University of Cambridge, in England; Library of the Polytechnic University of Macau, in China, and Library of Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, in France, among others.
In the United States, “O Mar de Vidro” can be consulted at the Widener Library at Harvard University (Massachusetts), the Firestone Library at Princeton University (New Jersey), the Joseph Regenstein Library at the University of Chicago (Illinois) and the Latin American and Iberian Studies – ILAIS at the Catholic University of America (Washington DC).
Those interested in Latin American Literature can buy my book of poetry, in Portuguese, by emailing [email protected].
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have a particular mentor. But I’ve learned a lot from my writer friends, from my professors and through reading.
