Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Christensen
Hi Erin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began Custom Cakes and Cupcakes by Erin to progress my cake decorating skills so as to be able to create special, one-of-a-kind, detailed birthday cakes for our daughters. This quickly spread to other family and friends, and then into a home cottage foods business, where I took on orders for cakes and cupcakes for local customers and all their events. I now focus on creating video tutorials on my YouTube and other social channels, as I absolutely love sharing techniques and ideas I’ve developed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I consider myself very fortunate so far, however of course, bakers have often been faced with extreme fluctuations of ingredient and tool prices, costing us changes in how we need to price our products and approach social media. The internet also can be filled with naysayers and those who don’t feel that cake decorating isn’t a true entrepreneurial endeavor. I always tell others that these people are only bringing more attention to your business!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create custom cakes and cupcakes and love finding new ways to create totally edible art. I work daily to develop new techniques for using various edible decorating mediums and put together tutorial videos to share these with others. I also take pride in developing all my own recipes for everything I make, so that visitors to my website have all the tools they need to create their own custom cakes and cupcakes.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Everything I bake, decorate, and record on video happens right in my own kitchen in my home! I don’t rent or own any additional or commercial spaces. I love being able to work as much as I can while being able to take care of my children every day.
