Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Van Horn
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thank you! I’m excited to be here! I never really knew what I wanted to do as a career. I tried so many different things from education to hospitality and often those two at the same time. It was difficult to make a decent living with just one job so I often had numerous jobs to make ends meet and more. But I would get burnt out after 60-70 hour weeks. The hospitality industry was much more fun and monetarily rewarding with sometimes, less hours. I took my bartending/catering/wedding venue experience and started Hausbar, a mobile bartending service that brings the bar and the all the essentials to the client at their private properties, venue or place of work for a corporate event. Today I’m running a successful business that provides ease for my clients/couples to create lasting memories at life’s most spectacular moments. We’ve recently partnered with incredible companies who are run by wonderful people such as LimeHill winery who is allowing us to have our own line of wine and Eight Oaks Farm Distillery who is making quality liquor with their agricultural products. Today I am satisfied with where the business is at! We plan on partnering with more good and local businesses to benefit everyone in our community. Thank you for giving me an excuse to remind me how Hausbar got started to to appreciate where we are now and where we’re going!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hmmm I promise I’m not bragging but I’m oddly really good at running a mobile bar service. I’ve had all these experiences and jobs that fit so well into Hausbar. But there are some challenges. I often find it hard asking for help. I have a great team who know how to work well and respect the ethos of Hausbar. However, I often am working 16 hour days because I just enjoy what I do. I sometimes struggle with finding time and space in which I can shut off from Hausbar. I don’t know when to turn off work mode because there is always something that can be done. At this point it’s not exactly a problem, I think I just may need to take a vacation to recoup slow moments and live in the present, that usually does the trick! I would not call this road exactly smooth but not rough either. I’m not sure how to label but I’m totally enjoying this ride and loving all the twist, turns and awesome opportunities I’m presented with. I truly wouldn’t have it any other way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Absolutely! Hausbar is a german word that translates to ‘home bar’. We’re literally brining a cocktail bar to where-ever you are. We often cater to private events like weddings in your backyard and corporate celebrations at the office! We provide an upscale bar service that solves the problem of needing a luxury service for an important and memorable event. We want guests to feel like they are at a true cocktail bar whether we are set up on a lobby of a new building or a huge backyard. The best part about what we do is allowing whoever hired us to enjoy their celebration without the stress of bar planning and seeing their face light up with ease and appreciation as they watch their guests enjoying themselves.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My favorite book is Kitchen Confidential by the late Anthony Bourdain. It’s a great book about the secrets of the food world from a cool chef’s perspective. I also enjoy listening to a podcast called Money with Katie. It’s soooo important to be smart with money when you’re a business owner!! I wish I could read more! I plan to when we hit our slow(er) season!!!
