Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth McAlpin
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started making art as a teenager exploring ways to be creative but my artistic path really started postgraduate when I moved to New Mexico to develop traditional drawing and painting skills with specific mentors. I continue to pull from this educational experience when needed despite the abstract work that dominates my portfolio today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has certainly been circuitous in terms of managing the on-going artistic process and work in so far as there were times I had to devote more time to working a separate career for financial stability. As a result, the path had times with heavy devotion while other periods with less consistency. But overall it has been a consistent part of my life for a very very long time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do not adhere to any prescriptions in terms of what I specialize in as I am more interested in having an open, ever-evolving, and wide-range mindset towards the work. With any idea that germinates, the execution of the idea may find one, several, or a mix of approaches. I think that having this flexibility removes creative barriers and allows for continued growth and exploration.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
- Where you show work with buyers looking for certain price points will help determine the size and kinds of work you will present.
- For example, certain art fairs will cater to certain buyers so you need to find the fair that supports your work and price point or change your work and price point to meet the type of fair.
- Starting out you need to lower your prices to build a base of collectors and then slowly increase prices.
- So if you are starting out with lower prices perhaps show smaller works without damping your creative spirit.
