Today we’d like to introduce you to Deona Lizette.
Hi Deona, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was always drawn to art, sketching everything from cartoons to people and nature. My mother recognized my passion and encouraged me to pursue it, but at the time, my focus was elsewhere. Throughout my secondary education, I was deeply involved in sports as well as performing arts, including acting, dance, singing, and instrumental classes. My schedule was packed, but no matter what, drawing was always a constant in my life. It was not until my third year of college that I made the decision to major in art and fully commit to it as a career. While in art school, I had moments of doubt, questioning whether I had chosen the right path. But I kept going, trusting in my passion and the vision I had for my future. Looking back, I know that pursuing art was the right choice, not just as a career but as a way of life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entering this field, everyone has a vision for where they want their career to go, and I am no different. I have been incredibly fortunate to have a mother who not only understands my dreams but wholeheartedly supports them. Her encouragement has been a constant source of strength, helping me push through challenges and stay focused on my path. Right now, my biggest hurdle is building a strong clientele, but I have been lucky to meet amazing people along the way. No matter the obstacles, I remain grateful for the journey and for those who continue to support me, especially my mother.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fine artist specializing in paintings, prints, and sculptures, creating figural abstract work. My focus is on transforming the figure in space, allowing it to emerge dynamically from the canvas as part of a branding ritual I imprint onto the surface. I use encaustic carving techniques that evoke the scarification seen on African tribal masks and skin, giving my work a distinctive texture and depth.
I aspire to be recognized for my innovative approach to encaustic carvings, pushing the boundaries of this medium in ways that set my work apart. One of my proudest achievements is furthering my education and earning a Master’s degree in a field I initially knew little about. That journey challenged me to explore new artistic possibilities, ultimately leading me to create something entirely unexpected. My work reflects that evolution, a testament to my curiosity, persistence, and passion for redefining artistic expression.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I welcome commissions and collaborations and am always open to new ideas and inspiration from others. Support for my practice can come in many ways, whether through donations, purchasing a piece, or visiting my studio to share thoughts and feedback on my past and present work. Every interaction contributes to my creative journey, and I genuinely appreciate those who take the time to engage with my art.
