Today we’d like to introduce you to Déja Simpson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have loved to create music ever since a little girl. However, the lost of my little brother to gun violence is what truly inspired me to pursue my music career and take it to the next level. The traumatizing experience led me to questioning my own life and decisions. I decided to use the unfortunate event as motivation to share positive music can uplift and decrease the violence in my neighborhood.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges in my career have been not being taken seriously as a Woman and unprofessionalism. Other challenges surround the idea that conscious music is “not popular” and cannot reach the masses because the industry is creating a negative agenda purposely to keep our Youth and people stuck in a self deteriorating cycle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Multidisciplinary Performing Artist and a Certified Art Therapist. With my music, I am intentional about sharing vulnerable stories of trial and empowerment showcasing resilience to battle through the tough times and come out victorious. Being a teacher, I approach all of my Art forms with the intention to teach and inspire. I am known for the Positive Affirmations I rap with my Medicine Drum, which mixes contemporary Hip-Hop and the Indigenous sound of the ancient drum.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned to believe in myself and not give up, no matter the challenges that arise. Being authentically me always wins.
