Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Galiyas.
Hi Christopher, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started back when social media wasn’t a thing, when everything wasn’t blasted out to the masses with the click of a button. I had to print out pictures from my camera roll and put together picture books to take to local hair salons, barber shops, and my mother’s bank(s) she worked at (she had a Christopher Mark Galiyas Gallery Wall behind her desk) & people would see my work this way.,,,,yep, ancient times,
Now, people see my work on social media and I get a lot of DM’s about potential projects this way ….. along with “word of mouth” and people passing by my exterior work and looking me up online.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Art World is never really a smooth road & if other artists tell you the road is perfectly flat with no potholes or detours they are lying. I have always had 2 jobs in my life, one was always as an artist and the other was a job was an 8 to 4 that gave me the ability to be an artist & create because it was a steady income. The last 18 + years, I’ve been an Art Teacher (K-8) and an artist doing a ton of custom work for clients as well, doing custom illustration work, painting canvases for interior designers, huge mural work or even business logo work,
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for my whimsical, fun, super bright murals and stylized artwork. I’m proud of all of the work I’ve done over the years….however…. I’d like to go back and tweak a few things (I’m pretty hard on myself) on some of my older work but the one the stands out to me is probably my son, Arrow’s room. It was soooooooo much fun to do with my wife & It was the first baby nursey I got to do for me (us). The room was so much different than a typical nursery & it really made me fall in love with doing baby nurseries, hands down baby nurseries & playrooms are my favorite to mural up.
What makes you happy?
Home is my happy place. I’m just a homebody, there’s something about being on my own property that I love. We are going through a huge home renovation at the moment and we are finally at the finish line, which is super exciting to us. It’s so much fun watching it all come together. If I’m not working for a client. wrapping up our home project or having a beer I’ll probably be in the backyard catching football with my oldest son. It’s just an amazing feeling being at home and hanging out with my family.
