Today we’d like to introduce you to Chimakwanibawii Stone
Hi Chimakwanibawii, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I had dropped out of Art School and had given up on any sort of Career as a working Artist for 16 years when just before pandemic hit, I decided I needed to Paint again. I had a show with almost no turn out due to the aforementioned pandemic, and I thought I would have to hang it up again. However , I sold more artwork and was contracted for commissioned paintings. I continued to grow my business and did work for other company’s as well.
I continue working into the future as my next exhibition is in Oct. And I am participating in a Local Art Crawl in August
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At times it’s been super smooth sailing and the work seemed too easy. Which makes up for all the days of creative block or lack of motivation to work.
I think the biggest struggle I have to over come is doubting myself.
Self doubt definitely has stopped me from creating my best artwork at times
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I use acrylic paint on various surfaces and have started experimenting with other paints also. Gouache quickly became a favorite.
I use a lot of bright and vibrant colors to catch the eye. The subject matter can vary from a traditional scene to something out of a Sci-fi comic.
I am proud of the amount of work I have behind me, as I never thought I would make it this far. I am proud to still be able to work as an Indigenous Artist
What sets me apart from others , is I am me. I feel like the best version of art is going to come from your true self and the only way to be your truest self is to live your truths. My truth happens to be painting and being me.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the city, but because I enjoy the woods and forest now, I only visit once I a great while.my favorite part is the variety of foods and different entertainment
