Today we’d like to introduce you to Butterr Improv
Hi Butterr, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2023, Abby, Chelsea, Janet, Jenn, and Peterr all took a leap into Improv 101 at the Boomerang Comedy Theater, with Angi as our instructor. We each joined for different reasons—some to sharpen public speaking, others to crack up their comedy game or just meet new people. Despite coming from all different walks of life, we stuck with it, moving from 101 all the way through to 501. That’s when Butterr was born—and let’s just say, things have been on a roll ever since! Now, we perform monthly at the Boomerang, plus we’ve added shows in Lafayette and New Orleans to our mix.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve definitely faced our fair share of challenges. With all of us being different ages, coming from various professions, and juggling busy schedules, coordinating shows, especially the out of town ones, can be tricky. But one thing we never change is our Monday practice! Every week, without fail, we meet up. If our usual venue isn’t available, no big deal—we’ll just make it happen at someone’s house. That’s the magic of improv: when life throws us a curveball, we don’t freeze—we just roll with it and find a way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re a long-form improv team, and because we bonded so much from day one, we like to think of ourselves as a dysfunctional little family—kind of like a 90s sitcom! In fact, we love to say we bring those 90s sitcom vibes. Staying true to that family feel, our shows are in a “Living Room” format. Basically, we pull up six chairs and have a real, unscripted conversation about anything—our day, our week, or a specific theme. Once we’ve had a good laugh or shared some real-life moments, we clap out, clear the stage, and dive right into improv. Our fans, or as we call them, Butterrcupps, love seeing how we turn those genuine stories into scenes at each show.
We also add a twist by featuring a special guest at our monthly Boomerang show, and the overall theme changes depending on who the guest is. For example, our September guest was Miss LSU, so we went with a competition theme, sharing stories of our wins and fails in life.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Luckily, our improv journey began post-Covid in 2022, so we didn’t face the pandemic’s direct challenges. Instead, we had the chance to form our team and build those strong bonds without that hurdle. It’s been smooth sailing—or, we should say, a smooth spread—for Butterr ever since!
