Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Domit Del Valle
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts with dolls and dollhouses. As a kid, I would love to create little cities with my cousin’s dolls and toys. I clearly remember creating little environments for these toys. I have multiple memories of different ‘miniature cities or houses’ that I loved spending time crafting. This was not very in tune with my assigned gender, but I still did it without judgement until I was a teen. I then stopped ‘playing with dolls’, but continued drawing and imagining myself as an actor. I have always known that creativity runs in my veins. I just have had periods of insecurity because of this. I come from a business oriented family, and I have created barriers in my mind, because I want to fill my family’s expectations. After studying product design, teaching design, art, and film classes; and studying a masters in production design, I feel closer to those goals of creativity in my life. I still struggle sometimes to make myself understood in a career where job security is not a given, and where it seems from the outside that I am not thriving as much as, say, an investment banker would. But little by little I have found my true self as a production designer, actor, and filmmaker. In other words, I make big dollhouses for films, and like to play in them. I will continue to work hard, make sacrifices, and risk it all to find myself in this tough world of creativity and the film industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My identity. Finding myself. And the voice in my head that keeps telling me to get a full time job and quit my dreams. This voice, sadly, is often reminded to me by the people closest to me. And I understand. People who love me want to see me happy and thriving.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a production designer and an actor. I specialize in designing genre films. Sci-fi, Horror, Period films. My next goal is to design a fantasy film. As an actor, I tend to take on more comedic roles, though it is not my primary source of expression. Production Design is. I am very proud of my thesis film “Bajo La Tierra”, as it is just starting its festival run, and was nominated for an Imagen Award (alongside another film I designed that I am also very proud of, “Cuando Volvimos A La Tierra”) I feel that what sets me apart from other designers is my passion and understanding of acting and performance.
Any big plans?
I have multiple plans and ideas, but nothing is set in stone. I am creating a small production company in Mexico City alongside some amazing collaborators. I am continuously working on my portfolio and improving my practice, so that one day I can get an artist visa and go back to work in Los Angeles and New York City.
