Today we’d like to introduce you to Amélie Swann.
Hi Amélie , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up with a stutter is hard as a kid, but I found solace in music. I began playing guitar at age 6 and absolutely loved strumming away as I learned basic music theory and language. When I was 11, I convinced myself to try out for choir as well as the school musical “Cinderella.” I got the lead role in the musical and landed many solos my first year in choir. I LOVED singing as a kid not only because music is just the best, but also because when I sing, I can’t stutter. My school choir teacher told me to audition for a professional children’s choir called “The Bel Canto Children’s Choir” so I did and got into the prestigious group as a mezzo soprano. We sang mass at the Vatican once and it is a highlight of my life for sure.
Moving along through high school, I auditioned and was only one of two people in the country to be accepted into the Temple University Jazz Vocal Performance Program. I studied jazz vocal performance for one year. Looking ahead, I realized that if you want to learn how to perform well, you just have to do it. I dropped out of Temple and joined a rock group called “The Hips.” We weren’t super successful, but I was 19 and having fun!
I bartended for years to supplement my income as I looked for a new band to join. I met two bartenders at a restaurant I worked in and we formed the band “DRAMA!” Our three piece electronic rock band (think “Little Dragon”) practiced, recorded and performed for 5 years. We made a few singles and an awesome EP called “Killer Villain” that you can listen to on Spotify!
Covid hit my band members hard and they decided that they didn’t want to pursue a music career any longer.
BUT I DID. And that meant that I had to start over. So that’s what I freaking did. In April of 2021, my debut EP “Dirty Looks” (co-produced, mixed and mastered by Tyler Falcone ) was received amazingly well by listeners and also got noticed by Frank Cervantes who quickly signed me to his budding label “Moon Rocket Records”.
These days you can find me playing sets at the Philadelphia Art Museum, writing for a trip hop label or attempting to make viral tik toks. I’m going to tour the UK in February of 2025. I’m really proud of myself. If you have a dream, go for it!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in producing electronic music in the style of downtempo and trip hop. I’m a huge trip hop nerd and can talk about it all day. My biggest talent is probably my songwriting and singing voice. I’m always asked to do vocal features for electronic producers. I think they reach out to me because I can weave a melody and lyric into an already composed piece without making the entire song messy. There’s a pocket for the voice and I find it quickly and effectively. Reach out to me via IG for my collaboration rates.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
As I stated previously, singing mass for the Pope at the Vatican is sure up there!
