Today we’d like to introduce you to Adela Navarro
Hi Adela, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey in Spain, where I was born in 1988. My passion for visual arts led me to explore various creative branches such as painting, photography, video, drawing, installation, and mural art.
I pursued a degree in Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from 2014 to 2018, which laid the foundation for my artistic career. My educational journey has been quite diverse, as I also completed a Master’s in Teacher Training and earned degrees in Business Administration and Advertising. This unique blend of art and creative management has allowed me to approach my work from multiple perspectives.
My artistic curiosity has taken me beyond Spain’s borders. I participated in artist residency programs and international projects that exposed me to different cultural landscapes. In Mexico, I immersed myself in the Centro de Artes Morelense de Cuernavaca, where I explored graffiti. In Spain, I furthered my studies in experimental painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Basque Country.
Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in creating artworks, conducting creative workshops, and collaborating on social initiatives that demonstrate the power of art to drive positive change. I have exhibited my work in Madrid, Portugal, and New York, where it has received notable recognition and success.
My journey has been one of continuous learning and exploration, combining my artistic vision with a commitment to critical societal thinking and creative management.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road; every journey has its challenges. Here are some of the struggles I faced along the way: 1. Balancing Education and Art: While pursuing multiple degrees in Fine Arts, Business Administration, Advertising, and a Master’s in Teacher Training, balancing the demands of academia with my passion for art was challenging. Each field required a different mindset and skill set, making it difficult to juggle them all simultaneously. 2. Financial Constraints**: As with many artists, financial stability was a significant challenge, especially in the early stages of my career. Funding my education, artistic projects, and travel for residencies and international programs often required careful budgeting and resourcefulness. 3. Finding My Artistic Voice**: Exploring various creative branches such as painting, photography, video, drawing, installation, and mural art was both exciting and overwhelming. It took time and experimentation to find my unique artistic voice and style. 4. Cultural Adaptation: Participating in artist residency programs and projects in different countries exposed me to diverse cultural landscapes, which was enriching but also challenging. Adapting to new environments, understanding different cultural contexts, and communicating effectively required patience and openness. 5.Recognition and Opportunities: Gaining recognition and securing opportunities in the competitive art world was another hurdle. Exhibiting my work in prestigious venues like Madrid, Portugal, and New York required persistence, networking, and continuous self-promotion. 6.Balancing Art and Social Initiatives: Being actively involved in social initiatives and projects that contribute to critical societal thinking demanded a delicate balance. It was essential to integrate my artistic vision with meaningful social impact while ensuring the sustainability of both aspects.
Despite these struggles, each challenge taught me valuable lessons and shaped me into the artist I am today. The road may have been bumpy, but the experiences and growth have made it worthwhile.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist with a specialization in painting, photography, video, drawing, installation, and mural art. My work is known for its multidisciplinary approach and its focus on critical societal themes. I create art that spans various media and techniques, often exploring themes of identity, culture, and social issues. My work is distinguished by its versatility and its engagement with social change. I take pride in my exhibitions in Madrid, Portugal, and New York, and my involvement in social initiatives and creative workshops. What sets me apart is my diverse educational background, which combines Fine Arts with Business Administration, Advertising, and Teacher Training, allowing me to approach my art with both creativity and strategic insight. Additionally, my international experiences and commitment to using art for social impact contribute to the unique character of my work.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the value of resilience and adaptability. In the ever-evolving world of art, challenges and changes are inevitable, whether they come in the form of financial constraints, cultural adjustments, or evolving personal and professional goals. Embracing these challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles has been crucial.
Resilience has taught me to persevere through setbacks and to view failures not as endpoints but as valuable learning experiences. Adaptability has allowed me to stay open to new ideas, techniques, and perspectives, enriching my work and helping me navigate the diverse environments in which I create.
Ultimately, this lesson has reinforced the importance of maintaining a flexible mindset and a strong commitment to my vision, enabling me to continue evolving as an artist while staying true to my core values.
