We speak with so many brilliant folks across dozens of industries and when those folks happen to be working for someone else, sometimes we can’t help but wonder why they aren’t working for themselves. How do folks decide between joining a firm or starting their own? We posed the question to the community and have shared some of their responses below.

When I first got my Real Estate License, I had to join a brokerage. The first license you get is as a sales associate, which requires you to hang your license with a Broker. After I graduated law school, and passed the bar exam, I knew that I wanted to join a law firm and learn from other attorneys. I was very eager to learn from others and I wanted to take in everything I learned. I handled my own cases and with the guidance of a seasoned immigration lawyer I was able to learn a lot. After two years working with there, I wanted a change of pace. I wanted to be challenged and was able to land a job at the largest Hispanic owned law firms in New York that primarily handled all types of immigration cases. After the pandemic I took a hard look at how I spent my days. I had a job a loved, but when that ended for the day. my default evening was watching TV. I enjoy my share of TV but at this point it could consume up to 5 hours a night. I felt that was a waste and considered what I could do during those hours instead. Briefly I did consider starting my own business, but I had never done that. What I had done over the past 15 years was learn how nonprofits operate and had navigated my way through compliance.
