Today we’d like to introduce you to Shara Ruffin, Lcsw
Hi Shara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began with a deep-seated passion for helping others and a commitment to the field of social work. I pursued my education at Temple University, earning my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. This foundational education equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge to embark on my professional journey.
After completing my undergraduate studies, I advanced to Howard University, where I obtained my Master’s degree in Social Work. This advanced education provided me with a robust framework for understanding complex social issues and developing effective interventions.
My professional career began in the mental health field, where I worked extensively in psychiatric hospitals and community mental health settings. These roles allowed me to gain firsthand experience in crisis intervention, therapy, and support services for individuals dealing with severe mental health challenges.
Recognizing a significant gap in the support available for social workers preparing for their licensing exams, I decided to take a bold step. I founded Journey to Licensure, a platform dedicated to providing comprehensive support, resources, and coaching for social workers aiming to pass their licensing exams and advance their careers.
Through Journey to Licensure, I have developed specialized programs that address the unique needs of social work professionals. My approach combines practical exam strategies, personalized coaching, and a deep understanding of the social work profession. I am committed to empowering social workers to achieve their professional goals and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
In addition to my work with Journey to Licensure, I have also received several accolades and recognition for my contributions to the field. My dedication to supporting social workers has not only helped numerous individuals pass their exams but has also fostered a supportive community where aspiring social workers can thrive.
Today, I continue to lead Journey to Licensure with a focus on innovation, support, and excellence. My mission remains to elevate the profession of social work by equipping professionals with the tools they need to succeed.
From my early days working in the trenches of mental health services to becoming a thought leader in social work licensure preparation, every step of my journey has been fueled by a desire to make a tangible difference. My work is not just about passing exams; it’s about building confidence, competence, and a sense of community among social workers.
Looking ahead, I am excited to expand the reach of Journey to Licensure and continue advocating for the needs of social workers everywhere. Whether through one-on-one coaching, comprehensive study materials, or innovative online resources, my goal is to support the next generation of social workers in achieving their professional dreams.
I hope this detailed account provides a comprehensive overview of my journey and the milestones that have defined my career. If there are any specific aspects you would like to delve deeper into, please let me know!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to where I am today has been far from smooth. It has been marked by numerous challenges and struggles that have shaped both my professional and personal life.
One of the most significant hurdles I faced was balancing my career with personal responsibilities. As a single mother, I often found myself juggling the demands of parenthood with the rigorous requirements of my professional roles. There were times when I had to manage my son’s needs, such as his school activities and health issues, while also meeting the high expectations of my job. This dual responsibility frequently led to feelings of guilt and stress, as I strived to excel in both areas without compromising one for the other.
In the early stages of my career, I encountered difficulties managing the high-stress environments of psychiatric hospitals and community mental health settings. These roles required not only a deep understanding of mental health issues but also the emotional resilience to support individuals in crisis. The intensity of this work often left me feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. Additionally, witnessing the struggles and traumas of my clients on a daily basis took an emotional toll, leading to periods of compassion fatigue and questioning my own capacity to continue in such demanding roles.
Another major struggle was the lack of support and resources available for social workers preparing for their licensing exams. This gap in support systems inspired me to create Journey to Licensure, but the process of establishing this platform was not without its own set of challenges. Building a comprehensive program from scratch required extensive research, planning, and a significant financial investment. There were numerous instances of financial strain, where funding the development of the program seemed daunting. Moreover, as a woman of color, I faced additional barriers in the entrepreneurial space, including bias and skepticism from potential supporters and clients.
Furthermore, as someone with ADHD, I faced additional hurdles in maintaining focus and organization amidst the myriad of tasks required to run a business and support my clients. This condition sometimes made it difficult to keep track of conversations and manage time effectively. There were moments when the symptoms of ADHD, such as distractibility and impulsivity, interfered with my productivity and ability to follow through on commitments. However, I have learned to navigate these challenges by implementing structured systems, utilizing technology aids, and seeking support when needed.
Throughout my journey, I also encountered periods of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Despite my qualifications and experience, there were times when I questioned my own capabilities and the value I brought to my clients. Overcoming these internal struggles required a great deal of self-reflection, professional development, and support from mentors and peers who believed in my vision and potential.
Despite these struggles, each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons and strengthened my resolve to make a difference. The challenges I faced have not only shaped my career but also deepened my empathy and understanding of the complexities that many social workers encounter in their professional journeys.
Today, I am proud of the resilience and perseverance that have brought me to this point. The road may have been bumpy, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. I continue to draw on these experiences to support and inspire others through Journey to Licensure, ensuring that no social worker has to navigate their path alone. By sharing my struggles and triumphs, I hope to empower others to overcome their own challenges and achieve their professional goals.
I hope this enhanced response provides a comprehensive overview of the struggles and challenges faced along the way. If there are any specific aspects you would like to explore further, please let me know!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I anticipate significant shifts and trends in the social work industry, particularly in how we approach licensure and ongoing professional development.
1. Increased Emphasis on Technology and Digital Learning:
The integration of technology in education and professional development will continue to grow. We are likely to see more advanced online learning platforms, interactive study tools, and virtual reality simulations for social work practice. These technological advancements will make exam preparation more accessible, engaging, and tailored to individual learning styles.
2. Greater Focus on Mental Health and Well-being:
As awareness of mental health issues continues to rise, there will be a greater emphasis on the mental health and well-being of social workers themselves. The industry will likely develop more resources and support systems to help social workers manage stress, prevent burnout, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. This trend will also influence licensure preparation, with a focus on resilience and self-care strategies.
3. Expansion of Specialized Certifications:
In addition to general licensure, we will see an expansion in specialized certifications for social workers. These might include areas like trauma-informed care, telehealth, and integrated behavioral health. Such certifications will require targeted exam preparation and continuing education, creating new opportunities and challenges for licensure support services.
4. Evolution of Licensure Standards and Requirements:
Licensure standards and requirements may evolve to keep pace with changes in the social work profession and societal needs. This could involve updates to the exam content, the introduction of competency-based assessments, or changes in the supervision and fieldwork requirements. Staying abreast of these changes will be crucial for organizations like Journey To Licensure to provide relevant and effective support.
5. Greater Diversity and Inclusion:
The industry will continue to push for greater diversity and inclusion within the social work profession. This shift will include a focus on culturally competent care and addressing systemic inequalities. Licensure preparation programs will need to incorporate these elements into their curricula, ensuring that social workers are well-equipped to serve diverse populations effectively.
6. Policy and Advocacy Efforts:
Social workers will increasingly engage in policy and advocacy efforts to address broader social issues and influence change. As a result, there will be a need for licensure preparation programs to include training on advocacy, policy analysis, and leadership skills.
7. Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Work:
The future of social work will involve more interdisciplinary collaboration with other fields such as healthcare, education, and criminal justice. This trend will require social workers to have a broader knowledge base and adaptable skills, which will be reflected in the licensure exams and preparation strategies.
At Journey To Licensure, we are committed to staying ahead of these trends and continuously evolving our services to meet the changing needs of social workers. Our goal is to provide comprehensive support that not only helps social workers pass their licensing exams but also prepares them for the future of the profession. We believe in fostering a community of lifelong learners who are equipped to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
By embracing these changes and trends, we aim to lead the way in licensure preparation and professional development for social workers, ensuring that they are ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the future.
I hope this detailed response provides a clear vision of where the industry is headed and how Journey To Licensure plans to adapt and lead in this evolving landscape. If there are any specific aspects you would like to discuss further, please let me know!
