Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hurt
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Seattle Art Source in 2016 after a professional transition but spent about a year and a half before officially launching doing some discerning and planning. My previous job ended and I wanted to take the opportunity to really reflect on what I wanted to do next instead of reacting to a need by just taking the first thing I could find. I needed to discover what really motivated me, what skills I wanted to capitalize on and then create a plan around those values. I worked with a coach actually, which I found immensely helpful. She was able to help me see how all the diverse work experience I had was going to be an asset to me even though on paper I felt like I looked like a mess. My coach changed my perspective and I really solidified my desire to run my own operation, connect people with beauty and be an advocate, all of which I do at Seattle Art Source. So that was 8 years ago which is shocking and wonderful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think operating a small business is smooth for anyone! I love what I do but there are obstacles here and there. I feel like if we could survive Covid and being shut down during the pandemic, then we can get through anything. I have been incredibly blessed with great hires, supportive work roommates and loyal clients, all of which make it a joy to do business. One of the challenges is that you always have to be growing and adapting. Nothing is static and not pushing the needle doesn’t mean you rest at a stand still, it means you are digressing as a business. The hustle is real and constant. Thankfully, my hustle muscle has also gotten stronger :)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Seattle Art Source?
Seattle Art Source has grown to become the industry standard for art advising in the Pacific Northwest. We have a multi faceted and nimble approach which allows us to work with a wide range of clients. From individuals who need one piece of special art for their home to complex public and commercial art scopes, we do it all. We represent over 50 artist most of whom are located in the Pacific Northwest which is something we are passionate about. I love building a bridge of access from artist to art lover and work tirelessly to strengthen those connections. Access is incredibly important to me and all our art is available to peruse and purchase on our website which allows us to reach a global audience. Between our brick and mortar location in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, our online presence and our white glove service options, we have something that works for everyone.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I am the eldest of three kids and spent my childhood in the San Fransisco Bay Area. I was, and still am, a big reader and loved nothing more than tearing through my haul from the public library. I was a pretty compliant kid and didn’t have much of a rebel phase. My parents were very values driven people, deeply unified as a couple and strongly invested in their kids. I saw demonstrations of service, sacrifice and humility in my family of origin. We also took the non conventional path as a family and lived on a boat, traveled to Europe and West Africa and saw parts of the world that are certainly less traveled by most American teens. Travel, food and experiencing other cultures are very ingrained in me and I attribute my curiosity to these early experiences.
