Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Pederson
Sally, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, it wasn’t just one event. It was a series of events that, over two years, made me decide the time for change is now!
I will sum up the major points and not get into too many details, or we will be here for a very long time.
Within about two years, I received a court-ordered death certificate for my husband. He went “missing” seven years prior. It was determined shortly after his disappearance that he was murdered, although his body has never been found. It was a very tough time.
Shortly after receiving the death certificate, my boyfriend of several years and I decided to end our relationship.
About six or eight months after that, the man I started dating (whom I had known for around 15 years) had died of an aneurysm.
It was another very challenging time, and I needed a change. My initial plan was to expand my company to the USA, but the day before I planned to leave, my new business partner in the expansion said he would only be my partner if I pretended to be his fiancé. He would buy me a big house, a large ring, and pay for my daughter’s private school anywhere in the world. If I wasn’t happy playing pretend by the time my daughter finished school in 5 five years, he would give me 2 million dollars, and we would part ways. He was married with children at the time.
It was enough for me to flip my middle finger at North America as a whole and move to Costa Rica.
Was my timing perfect?
Absolutely NOT!
Just ask my daughter. When she was a teenager, she said the move was the worst experience of her life. Now that she is older, I don’t think she sees it that way anymore.
Was it easy?
Parts of the transition were straightforward, but other parts were complex. I questioned if I had made the right decision, worried about the adjustments we had to make, and there were times when nothing seemed to be working right. I had to ask myself, are these challenges to see how badly I want this, or are these things happening because I don’t belong here and should move back to Canada?
I’m now living in my fifth country and love spending time in new destinations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Each move presented its own set of obstacles. For example, I often found myself in unfamiliar environments where I didn’t know anyone, which made building a new network of contacts and support systems quite challenging.
Language barriers were another significant hurdle. Moving to countries where I didn’t speak the local language required me to overcome communication difficulties, both in professional settings and daily life. This often meant navigating through bureaucratic processes and social interactions in a language that was not my own, which could be quite overwhelming.
Additionally, adapting to different cultural norms and practices, such as handling everyday tasks like paying bills, presented its own challenges. Each country had its own systems and procedures, which required me to quickly learn and adapt to new ways of managing these aspects of daily life.
Despite these challenges, each experience was an opportunity for growth. They taught me resilience, adaptability, and the ability to learn quickly in diverse and dynamic environments.
