Today we’d like to introduce you to Rori Zura.
Hi Rori, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since 2016, I have been discovering lumps in my breasts, not to mention a significant family history of various types of cancers, mainly breast cancer. Given my dense and cystic breasts, I tried to obtain a preventive mastectomy to avoid experiencing what my family members had gone through.
Regrettably, I wasn’t able to have the procedure without bearing the financial burden. Fast forward to the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when I noticed another lump. Initially, I dismissed it as yet another cyst.
However, as it persisted beyond my menstrual cycle, that’s when I realized something was wrong. On August 17th, 2020, at the age of 33, I received an official diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer.
I’ve always been an active person. My mom used to say when I was a baby I learned to run before I could walk and since then I’ve been on the go. Breast cancer wasn’t going to stop that part of my life though, so I learned how to adapt and overcome any obstacle that stood in my way.
Leveraging the power of fitness, Rori successfully combated breast cancer, and now, as a breast cancer exercise specialist, she’s dedicated to helping you achieve the same.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my treatment, I faced setbacks, as is common in a breast cancer journey. One setback though proved to be significant.
After my double mastectomy, I received the news that my lymph nodes were clear and the remaining tumor had been successfully removed. However, a week later, my surgeon delivered the update of discovering micro-metastasis in one of my biopsied lymph nodes. Another surgery would be necessary to remove them, posing a higher risk of lymphedema.
I was furious at first, but I calmed down and discussed proactive management with my surgeon, including the possibility of seeing a lymphedema therapist – before going through surgery.
This was the birth of Foobs & Fitness. Tired of reactive approaches that waited for symptoms to appear, I refused to let history repeat itself. Recognizing that others faced similar challenges, I knew action was needed.
After going through surgery and needing to undergo 25 rounds of radiation plus 6 more months of oral chemo, I was finally finished with active treatment.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Foobs and Fitness isn’t just a fitness service; it’s a space for hope and empowerment that allow breast cancer survivors to thrive. I specialize in providing tailored exercise programs and support to those who have battled breast cancer. The ever-growing number of studies highlights the positive impact of physical activity. It reduces the risk of cancer, mitigates the side effects of cancer treatment, and minimizes the chances of a recurrence. My goal is to create a tidal wave of change within our healthcare system. To help survivors reclaim their strength, confidence, and vitality through physical activity and wellness coaching.
During my extended treatment plan involving radiation and oral chemotherapy, I pursued certification as a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Subsequently, I became a certified Cancer Exercise Specialist with the Cancer Exercise Training Institute. I specialize in post-breast cancer exercise programs virtually and in person, utilizing fitness as a tool for physical and emotional healing. I’m known for using a compassionate approach, a deep understanding of survivorship, and a commitment to empowering individuals to thrive beyond their diagnosis.
As a breast cancer survivor myself, I intimately understand the challenges and triumphs of the journey to recovery. This personal insight informs every aspect of my programming, ensuring that my clients receive not only effective fitness guidance but also empathetic support and encouragement.
I’m most proud of having been given the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors. Seeing my clients regain strength, resilience, and joy through my programs is incredibly fulfilling. I’m honored to be a part of each individual’s journey toward renewed wellness and vitality.
I want readers to know that at Foobs and Fitness, it’s not just about physical fitness; it’s about holistic well-being. My offerings go beyond exercise to encompass emotional support and community connection. With Foobs and Fitness, you’re not just a client; you’re part of a supportive, empowering community dedicated to reclaiming health and happiness after breast cancer.
Any big plans?
Currently, I’m able to offer virtual training sessions which has allowed me to reach clients across the country. However locally I’m only able to offer in-home visits, limiting my reach to clients within this geographic area. My aim is to expand my services by establishing a storefront location. This expansion will enable me to reach a broader audience and provide in-person support to individuals seeking specialized fitness guidance during their breast cancer journey.
