Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Middleton
Hi Matthew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My entire life I have been around the construction industry. My grandfather built houses, my dad was mason, and my uncles were all carpenters. I learned all about the industry from all of them and loved it. The most important thing I learned from them was to always take pride and do my best in everything I do.. when I grew into an adult I knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps and work in construction. I had a few jobs working for construction companies and learning my craft . But during this time I also was suffering from a severe drug addiction which took serious toll on my life. I lost my job and started committing crimes to support my habit. I spent the next 20 years battling my addiction going in and out of treatment centers and correctional facilities. Finally at age 39 I decided to get help once again and this time I stayed sober. I moved to Louisville Kentucky where I entered a residential treatment center and lived for about 7 months. I began working in construction and doing what I loved once again. In 2021 After a couple years of sobriety and working for other companies I decided to go for my dream and started my residential remodeling business, Middleton Home Improvements LLC. Since then I have had success in the residential remodeling business and also expanded into commercial flooring as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a very tough road through the years, during my active addiction I was unable to hold steady employment. During my sobriety and owning my own business I have faced adversity as well. I have had struggles such as finding qualified and reliable employees, inflation of materials and products causing home owners to not do as much remodeling as well. Also expanding businesses always brings a certain amount of fear of failure as well. I remembered my grandfather saying anything worthwhile doesn’t come easy and I remember that every time I face adversity. I hope to build a legacy that I can one day pass on to my kids.
As you know, we’re big fans of Middleton Home Improvement . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a small company that sources local employees mostly other people in the recovery community. I try to give others the second chances that someone gave me early in recovery . I also pride myself on my family values as well. I hope to build something that I can teach my son and one day pass on to him to carry on the tradition .
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I can’t say I have one specific book or informational tool that I use , instead I use many resources. I use other people I know in the industry and other people in recovery that are entrepreneurs as well.
