After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from West Chester University and gaining valuable experience in Corporate America, Jared Scott made a pivotal decision to return to his roots in the barbershop and pursue his passion for men’s grooming. Throughout his college years and beyond, Jared studied under the guidance of numerous Master Barbers, absorbing lessons in tradition, professionalism, and discipline. This commitment to excellence set him on a trajectory to work with prominent figures in Washington, D.C., and ultimately led to his proudest achievement: owning and operating a barbershop on Historic Capitol Hill.
Jared’s journey is driven by a deep desire to positively influence the lives of the men in his community, while staying true to the foundational values imparted by his first teacher. He was taught that a barbershop is more than just a place for grooming—it’s a hub of connection, responsibility, and tradition. Believing that barbers should be both formally educated and highly skilled in their craft, Jared differentiated himself by integrating business acumen with technical mastery.
With over 20 years of experience in the field, Jared has cultivated a well-established clientele and is dedicated to redefining the barbershop experience. His expertise lies in blending professionalism, organization, and a keen understanding of male grooming needs across diverse cultures and hair textures. He has made Capitol Hill his home for a decade, where he continues to adapt to its dynamic environment, delivering tailored services to clients from various backgrounds.
In 2016, Jared was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser to the District of Columbia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, becoming the youngest member of the board. This role highlights his leadership in the industry and positions him as an emerging voice for innovation and growth. As a proud 2006 initiate of the Noble Klan of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Jared lives by the motto, “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavour,” embodying principled living in both his personal and professional life.
That same year, Jared competed in a nationwide All-Star Men’s Hair Competition, a challenge that tested not only his technical skills but also his creative vision. The competition required expertise in multiple disciplines, including lighting, photography, makeup, and wardrobe design. Jared placed 2nd in the country, an achievement that marked the beginning of his education career. He soon became an educator for the renowned International Brand American Crew, traveling across the country to teach advanced haircutting techniques to licensed stylists and barbers. From hair shows and fashion events to platform work and celebrity styling, including working on the set of the hit Netflix series House of Cards, Jared has consistently pushed the boundaries of men’s grooming.
His expertise earned him an opportunity to join the Global Wella Brand as a Top Design Team Artist for the Seb Man men’s cutting team. In this role, he travels globally to teach barbers and stylists the importance of focusing on value over price, a principle that underscores his entire approach to the craft.
Jared is passionate about elevating the industry by emphasizing better techniques, professionalism, and education. His barbershop, HIS Grooming, is a testament to this vision, offering clients a classic, welcoming environment with highly skilled staff dedicated to helping them become the best version of themselves.
While Jared’s professional achievements are impressive, he considers his most important role to be that of a father. In 2016, he welcomed his son, Jude Christian Scott, into the world—a straight-A student, young athlete, and active member of his community. Jared is committed to being present for Jude’s milestones, whether on the field, at school, or in church. For Jared, success is not defined solely by professional accolades but by the impact he has on the people who matter most.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. The path has always been set and clear, but walking it has been a different story. Knowing the path and actually walking it are two very different things. It takes a strong work ethic, a sense of purpose, and a lot of favor just to recognize the path—let alone stay on it. Sacrifice, determination, and persistence are essential. Walking isn’t passive; it requires direction, readiness, and constant awareness.
This journey has been full of highs and lows, peaks and valleys. I’ve lost friends and family. I’ve been through divorce. I’ve faced financial struggles. There have been tears, but there have also been unspeakable joys. There have been moments I never imagined I’d find myself in, both challenging and rewarding. I’ve been places I never expected to go, and I know I’m far from finished.
This isn’t just a road—it’s a mountain to climb. But the good news is, we have an incredible guide. With God, all things are possible. Trusting and believing in Him is the only way to stay steady on this journey.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is the power of self-discovery. Understanding who I am—what I think, believe, and value—has solidified everything in my life, including my approach to business. As a business owner, I was thrust into leadership, but I quickly realized that leadership is not something you can demand or request. People don’t follow titles; they follow individuals who possess clarity, conviction, and authenticity.
At its core, leadership is an outgrowth of self-awareness. When you truly know yourself—when you become unapologetic about your values, beliefs, and actions—your leadership begins to emerge naturally. People are drawn to those who are deeply aligned with their purpose because authenticity resonates. The most compelling leaders don’t just speak about what they believe; they live it with unwavering commitment.
For me, self-discovery has been a transformative journey. It has revealed not only what I stand for but also what I am willing to dedicate my life to.
