Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Weimer
Hi Christine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When people ask me this question, I find myself simultaneously having too much to say and nothing at all. I think we all have a book or two, or a series of books, we could write about where we started and how we came to be where we are in the present. No matter what field we’re in, the passion we’re pursuing, or the journey we’re on, each one of us has a story that holds the lessons we’ve learned, the struggles we’ve faced, and the moments that have shaped us. And that’s precisely where my journey begins and continues on: with story.
I got started because I believe in the power of story. The way it connects us, how it bridges the gaps between our experiences, and helps us understand one another. Stories let us see ourselves and others through a unique lens, and through it, we learn, we heal, and we grow. Every story, whether told aloud or written down, is a way of discovering who we are and where we belong in the world. We communicate through story, we make sense of the world through story, and we find meaning in even the smallest moments.
That’s why I began and why I continue—because in every story, there’s something to be discovered, not just about the teller, but about ourselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Maya Angelou once said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
I learned at quite a young age that nothing I truly wanted would come easy to me. It wasn’t until my adult years I learned that was because everything worthy of having requires deep inner work and a resilient adaptability to change and discomfort. These days, I welcome the bumpy roads because they help me become a better driver. But I didn’t always have that mindset. There have definitely been times I did not feel secure or safe in my travels. Times I felt paralyzed with fear.
I could ramble off a list of ways I rode the struggle bus; how I got it wrong, had to detour, make a u-turn, swerve off the road to avoid a crash a dozen (or two) times. But instead, what I will say is that most of my struggles lasted as long as they did because I did not have enough self-belief that I could find my way. I could not even see another way because I did not think I was worthy of making it happen. This slowed my progress, caused me to choose the wrong people, prevented me from seeing that there would always be another chance to rise.
So, if you’re reading this aboard the struggle bus, don’t focus on how you can get out of the struggle. Focus on how you can work on the belief in yourself that you can, will, and are worthy of finding another way. Once you believe in yourself, know your worth, and validate that first and foremost, you will find yourself on cruise control on a smooth road to wherever you want to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Well, Our Galaxy Publishing is an educational and service-based platform for aspiring women writers to get the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to write and publish their books and build their author platforms. Our goal is to educate and support women-identifying people about the publishing landscape and how to move through the industry and the literary world. We want to help bridge the gap between race and gender in publishing by making sure women are knowledgeable and intentional about their writing journey while also putting out high-quality, impactful work into the world.
I think what sets us apart is that we don’t run on any particular publishing model; as in we’re not a traditional, hybrid, or vanity press. We want to put the publishing power and creative control in the writers’ hands, so we act as mentors and advisors that can support them to be in the driver’s seat. Most authors don’t know how to represent or position themselves in the literary market; whether they’re self-publishing or trying to attain a traditional experience. This has led all too many authors to give up too quickly, find themselves in shady or unfair publishing deals, or overwork themselves just to end up never achieving the success they so desire. We’re changing that because we want authors to be in the know about this industry and its inner components.
Plus, we prioritize affordability. Not only are we essentially a one-stop shop for all their needs, but we ensure our services and workshops are accessible and financially attainable.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Everyone who has ever given me a shot as a ghostwriter, editor, advisor, or mentor deserves credit for the success of Our Galaxy Publishing. I am beyond proud to say that about 70% of my clients have worked with me more than once, if not ongoing, and 85% of my 1:1 clients have come from referrals. The people I’ve connected with who believe in me have stuck with me, and I am so humbled by the way they continue to do so after almost five years.
Anyone who’s ever supported my book projects, shared my posts on social media, read my blogs, snapped for me during a poetry performance, or talked highly of me in a room I wasn’t in; they’re all part of this success story. They’re also all role-players in my ability to hold on to my self-belief and self-worth. While I know those two things come from within, knowing that I am seen, heard, and validated by those I want so badly to positively impact, means everything to me as I continue to grow my business and come closer to who I truly am at my core.
It would be unjust not to add that women like Annie Dillard, Audre Lorde, Gloria Steinem, Emily Dickinson, Barbara Park, Madeleine L’Engle, Joan Didion, Judy Blume, Gwendolyn Brooks, and many many more have all played a role in what I consider to be my success. Each of these authors has helped shape the writer, and woman, I’ve become in some way, keeping my belief in story alive.
